World Economic Forum, January 2010 – Bill and Melinda Gates highlight that 8-10 million deaths can be prevented in the next decade. – The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation commits $10 billion and challenges others to join them in bringing the benefits of immunization to all people, regardless of where they live. WHO, UNICEF and BMGF initiate Decade of Vaccines planning – Pedro Alonso (Institute for Global Health, Barcelona) and Chris Elias (PATH) asked to lead the planning effort. 7 Decade of Vaccines Vision We envision a world where children, families, and communities enjoy life protected from the threat of preventable disease. Recognizing that immunization is one of the most cost-effective means to achieve this vision, the purpose of the Decade of Vaccines is to extend the full benefits of immunization to all people, regardless of where they live. Access to safe and effective vaccines is a human right that is currently not enjoyed by everyone, particularly in low and middle-income countries.

8 Global Vaccine Action Plan Goals 1.Achieve global eradication and elimination goals agreed by the World Health Assembly for vaccine-preventable disease. Polio, Measles, Rubella, and Neonatal tetanus, etc. 2.In every country, reduce the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases such that they are no longer public health problems in 2020. Routine immunizations: DTP, Hib, Hep B New and underutilized: HPV, Rota, Pneumo Regional or high risk populations: MenA, JE, Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Cholera, Hep A, Rabies Countries choose their own priorities but must achieve universal coverage in every district and demonstrate reductions in disease incidence/burden 3.Maximize the contribution of immunization programs to integrated disease control and health efforts. ALRI, Diarrheal disease, cervical cancer, malaria, TB, seasonal flu

9 Global Vaccine Action Plan Goals 4.Encourage a robust scientific enterprise to ensure a continuous improvement in immunization strategies and produce innovation in the development of new and improved vaccines for high priority disease targets. Short-term, operational research to improve coverage, reduce vaccine wastage, lower delivery costs, etc. Mid-term translational research to increase % of vaccines out of cold chain, develop second-generation lower cost vaccines, or register and prequalify new vaccine candidates Long-term vaccinology and immunology research to advance HIV or TB vaccines, etc. 5.Ensure adequate and sustained support for vaccines and immunizations. Financial and human resources Country-level advocacy/demand, ownership and planning Disease surveillance and monitoring
