Computer Applications Week 9 A New Quarter: Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Research

Unit Assignment List Make a Simple Chart Excel Help Questions Required Study Hour Making Money Doing Nothing! Multiplication Table

What is your favorite number? …and you?..and you?

Can anyone memorize all 38 favorite numbers? A spreadsheet can do it!

Agenda What is a spreadsheet? Excel demonstration –Making a chart –Using help Power Point

What is a spreadsheet? Like a table in Word, a collection of cells Excel is the standard spreadsheet program 12345johnnie XYZ854

Why use a spreadsheet? Store and manipulate data Communicate through charts

Quick Demo- Making a chart Make labels and data Select labels and data INSERT > CHART

Insert data and headings into cells

Select (highlight) data and headings

INSERT>CHART

Your Turn I will show each of your charts to the whole class through the projector. Remember: 1)Make labels and data 2)Select labels and data 3)INSERT > CHART

What is the best way to learn about a program?

Excel Help On the desktop, there are 10 questions you will answer using the HELP in excel. You will type your answers in Word We will discuss them as a class so make it look good

Agenda New Seating Chart Required Study Hour What would you do with $150,000?

Seating Chart Some students will be directly assigned a seat. All student with an A will choose their own B - C students: Some will choose their own Listen for instructions!

Required Study Hour Students who are earning a D or F are being assigned a required study hour. Parental Notification Sheet is due next week. Thursday November 17th, 3:00 - 4:00

Spreadsheets Today you will learn how to do two things, –Insert formulas using the calculator –“Quick Copy” patterns in cells You will also see how to make $100,000 doing (almost) nothing

Why are we learning this? Spreadsheet have many purposes Projecting into the future is easy to do if you know the formula You can apply this to other types of projections

How will you make $100,000? Notes first- Get your notes out Demo and Guided practice second Finish all 4 parts- on your own Grade at end of period- double points today

Comparing 4 scenarios 1)Saving $10/ month with no interest 2)Saving $100/month with no interest 3)Saving $10/month with 5% annual interest 4)Saving $100/month with 5% annual interest

Formulas for each scenario 1- Add 10 to previous month 2- Add 100 to previous month 3- Multiply previous month by 1.00417 and add 10 4- Multiply previous month by 1.00417 and add 100

What are the steps? 1)Create new Excel worksheet 2)Type in headings for 5 columns -Month -Scenario 1 -Scenario 2 -Scenario 3 -Scenario 4

More Steps 3)Type 1 and 2 for month, this establishes a pattern 4)Select cells that have 1 and 2 in them 5)Grab the corner and copy all the way to 480 months

More Steps- Set up first month In the first month- put either 10 or 100 for each scenario VIEW>FORMULA BAR - turns on the formula bar

More Steps- Inserting the formula 6) Click the cell for the second month 7) Click calculator button on formula bar This lets you build the formula Create the formula by adding 10 to the value in the previous month’s cell

Last Step Copy the formula from month 2 into all of the cells up to month 480

Day 2 Agenda Make Graphs Comparing 4 scenarios for saving money (15 minutes) Making a Multiplication Table

Making Graphs and Money Make a line graph that compares money for each scenario with the month –Select all the data and labels first –INSERT>CHART –Choose x-y scatter with the continuous line choice –Put title and labels for each axis

Making a Multiplication table Today you are going to make a multiplication table using Excel. The multiplication table is a good example of how information can be stored and formatted in Excel.

What other types of cells are there? Cell phone Cell in you body Prison cell

Prison Cell Analogy Prisoner goes inside cell, data goes inside cell. There are different kinds of prisoners that go inside cells, there are different kinds of data that goes into cells, text, numbers, formulas.

Prison Cell Analogy Prison cell is part of a “cell block”, spreadsheet cell is determined by row and column. Prison cell walls (usually cement blocks) can be painted and so can the bars Spreadsheet cell can be filled with color (shading) and can have color on the edge (border)

Formatting Cells Select Cells you want to format 1)Apple-1 2)FORMAT>CELLS 3)Formatting Palette- Shading and Borders section 4)Toolbars

Quick review A specific cell can have any combination of the following –Value ( or data- the prisoner in the cell) –Format ( how the cell is formatted ) –Formula

Copy and Paste To make your life easier, Excel does have copy and paste. You need to know what you are trying to copy, do you want to copy the value in the cell or the format of the cell? Paste Special Formatting Painter

Spreadsheet Assignment Make a Multiplication Table up to 10 Separate Labels and Answers with different colors Answers are in a checkerboard pattern –Pick you own colors Use copy-paste special Use Pattern tool (Auto-fill)

Closure Show your neighbor your assignment Show them an example of the copy-paste special Show them an example of using the pattern copy tool Who can make the chart in the least number of steps?
