2 2 Introduction to Spreadsheets Spreadsheet – a computerized ledger Divided into rows and columns – Columns identified with alphabetic headings – Rows identified with numeric headings Cell – the intersection of a row and a column – Cell reference uniquely identifies a cell Consists of column letter and row number

3 Excel 2010 – the look Quick Access Toolbar Tabs Ribbon Microsoft switched to ribbon to have options more accessible and at your fingertips. Expansion Button Backstage view rows and columns Sheets

4 4 Types of Cell Entries Constant – an entry that does not change – Can be a numeric value or descriptive text Function – a predefined computational task Formula – a combination of numeric constants, cell references, arithmetic operators, and functions – Always begins with an equal sign

5 5 Formulas Used for calculations Start with = sign Use cell locations where possible Arithmetic Operators + = Add - = Subtract * = Multiply / = Divide

7 The Active Cell, Formula Bar, and Worksheet Tabs Active Cell Formula Bar Sheet tabs and names

8 Saving an Excel file Excel 2003 had the extension.xls Excel 2007 or 2010 has the extension.xlsx If sharing files with someone using Office 2003, you will need to Convert an Excel 2010 to 2003 – Go to the Backstage view by clicking on File

9 Making changes Add a row with 250 and 25 between rows 3 and 4 – Rt mouse click and insert row How are you going to get those formulas to copy? – Auto fill handle

10 Formatting Format the label ‘Add’ anyway you want – color, bold, etc. Center label We want the same formatting on the rest of the labels, so use FORMAT PAINTER Format Painter will copy the formatting from the selected cell and paint the formatting on the cell(s) you select next. To use the Format Painter more than once, double click on Format Painter

11 Format numbers Currency Decrease decimals Other number options Home Ribbon

12 Shade and border Use the fill option for shading Use the launcher button to get to border options

13 Cut, Copy, Paste There are many ways to cut, copy, paste First select the data – Right mouse click for the options – Use the Ribbon – Or use shortcut keys Cut = Ctrl + X Copy = Ctrl + C Paste = Ctrl + V
