Rhyming Words Using Goodnight Moon

Lesson Plan Class Description: Appropriate for a small group of first grade students. The students have demonstrated understanding of word families. The students demonstrate the ability to differentiate same and different final ending sounds. Objective: The student will identify and match rhyming words from a familiar text.

Materials Big book version of Goodnight Moon, by Margaret Wise Brown.
Chart paper/marker Power point presentation

Activity Introduce book, Goodnight Moon, to the students. Take time to look at each page and have the students talk about what they see on each page. Present the story to the class through sign language and oral reading. Point out the picture of the objects mentioned throughout the story.

Re-Read the story. Write down the sets of rhyming words on chart paper.
Have the students read the groups of rhyming words on the chart and again on the list provided. Review the rhyming words with the pictures provided in the presentation. Students can match rhyming words on the presentation

Follow up activities Students can copy rhyming words from the chart and draw their own pictures. Students can create sentences with the sets of rhyming words. Students can list more rhyming words to each set found in the story. Students can work together to write a new story with rhyming words they added.
