3 RESEARCH at UCY (2) State funding for 2004 appx. CYP 1,835,000 This covers: Project funding (4 types of programmes) Salaries of research assistants/scientists Co-funding for externally funded projects Start-up funding Applied research

4 RESEARCH at UCY (3) Main External funding from EU programmes: Framework Programme (FP6) SOCRATES LEONARDO MEDA EUMEDIS LEVENTIS (Basic Research) For 2004 actual funding to the UCY was CYP 1,550,633, of which CYP 918,967 from the EU

5 RESEARCH at UCY (4) Internal Research Programmes. ALL types of programmes are funded on a COMPETITIVE basis Research Programmes (RP’s): Research Activities Small size Research Programmes Medium size Research Programmes Large size Research Programmes Leventis Programmes (Basic Research) Applied Research Programmes

6 INTERNAL RESEARCH PROGRAMMES Research Activities (RA): Available to every academic researcher Internal evaluation, duration 1 year No salaries for research assistants Small Research Programmes: Typical annual funding CYP 10K-15K External evaluation, duration 1-2 years Covers RA costs and salary of postgraduate assistant

7 INTERNAL RESEARCH PROGRAMMES (2) Medium size RP’s: Typical budget CYP 20K-25K External evaluation, 2-3 years duration Participation of at least 3 members of academic staff & employment FT of PG Research Assistant Limited purchase of equipment Aim to fund simultaneously a number of programmes for each Faculty

8 INTERNAL RESEARCH PROGRAMMES (3) Large size RP’s: Typical budget CYP 40K-CYP 60K External evaluation, 3-4 years duration Multidisciplinary programmes Participation 3-6 academic staff from at least 2 Departments with 3 Postgraduate Assistants Purchase of equipment May have 2 scientific coordinators

9 INTERNAL RESEARCH PROGRAMMES (4) Applied RP’s: Programmes that have direct application to the needs of Cyprus: Specifications as for S & M RP’s Identify final Cypriot user of results Priorities for RP’s that deal with issues of immediate need Post-closure evaluation of effectiveness of results

10 INTERNAL RESEARCH PROGRAMMES (5) Start-up funding for new academic staff. Enables start-up of research activity, transfer of RP/Lab from another institution etc 15% additional funds for RA, for 3 years Support the transition and transfer of research activity Duration 2 years Salary of researchers, purchase of equipment & disposables Personal or team applications

11 EXTERNAL RESEARCH PROGRAMMES Leventis Foundation Programmes Support Basic research Typical budget CYP 25,000/year External evaluation, duration up to 3 years Specifications as for S & M RP’s

12 EXTERNAL RESEARCH PROGRAMMES (2) Co-funding of externally funded programmes For all EU programmes co-funding is required, in many cases this is in kind (ie staff time etc). There are programmes such as FP6 that need ACTUAL cash contributions. Cash co-funding USUALLY covers Purchase of equipment

13 RESEARCH & PROGRAMMES MANAGEMENT In order to support the management of Research and Externally funded Projects the Service has set up the following: Office for Research Support (2 Officers, 2 Secretaries) Office for Proposal Preparation (1 Officer) European Collaboration Office-Brussels (1 Officer) International & European Programmes Office (2 Officers, 2 Secretaries)
