Then describe in detail THREE changes to society which the Renaissance brought. Finally describe how these changes impact our society today. Some terms to remember in your description: humanism, merchants, vernacular, Renaissance Man, secular, the printing press.

33 The Question…  According to Niccolo Machiavelli, what kinds of qualities must a strong and effective leader or ruler have?  We will read a portion of The Prince to figure out some of these qualities  As you read, underline any portion of the text which you feel represents Machiavelli’s advice for how to be an effective ruler  WRITE AT LEAST FIVE OF THESE “TIPS” ON THE BACK OF YOUR SHEET!

34 MACHIAVELLI PROJECTS!  To express your understanding of the qualities of a strong leader according to Machiavelli, you will chose one of two project paths…  PATH ONE – INDIVIDUAL PROJECT  WRITE A POLITICAL SPEECH AND DESIGN A POLITICAL POSTER  PATH TWO – GROUP PROJECT (3 TO 4 PEOPLE)  CREATE AND FILM A POLITICAL COMMERCIAL

35 Path #1 – INDIVIDUAL PROJECT  Step #1 – A Political Speech  Write a speech which you, the politician, speak to your people about what kind of ruler you will be You MUST include five aspects of a Machiavellian ruler Remember your audience and purpose…this is a speech, so make sure you greet your audience to begin and make your writing as exciting and enthusiastic as possible to charm the crowd The speech must be 3/4 ths to 1 page long

36 Path #1 – INDIVIDUAL PROJECT  Step #2 – A Campaign Poster  Design a campaign poster which advertises your candidacy for political power You MUST include THREE aspects of Machiavellian rulers which are either printed or drawn out on poster Remember to include your NAME on the poster…you can make up the political office you are running for Including color makes these posters look MUCH better…you are encouraged to use the classroom markers Want to go above and beyond? Create a Glogster poster instead of the hand-made poster…see Mr. Osborne if you are interested

37 Path #2 – GROUP PROJECT Groups – FOUR to FIVE People (no more, no less)  Political Advertisement  Prepare and film a political advertisement for a candidate in the Machiavellian model Commercial must include THREE points about the candidate’s leadership style These five points will be related to Machiavelli’s tips for being an effective PRINCE or ruler Advertisement will be filmed by video camera by Mr. Osborne Project should last around one minute long You MUST prepare a script as a group before Mr. Osborne films Each person must be involved in the production, whether they are politician, narrator, testimony giver, etc. Feel free to include different segments (ex: politician speaking to camera, politician interacting with people, people giving testimonies about the candidate
