Learning Progressions Informed by research on cognitive development Respectful of the structure of math Topics spliced together then sliced into grade level standards Concepts, procedures, fluency, and application (math practices) equally weighted

DomainK12345678HS Counting and Cardinality Number and Operations in Base 10 Number and Operations - Fractions Number Systems Number and Quantity Operations and Algebraic Thinking Expressions and Equations Ratio and Proportional Reasoning Functions Algebra Measurement and Data Statistics and Probability Geometry

Conceptual Priorities in CC Math GradeConcepts K - 2Addition and subtraction – concepts, skills, and problem solving 3 - 5 Multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions – concepts, skills, and problem solving 6 Ratios and proportional relationships; early expressions and equations 7 Ratios and proportional relationships; arithmetic of rational numbers 8Single variable algebra

Required Fluencies for K-8 Fluent = “fast and accurate” GradeStandardRequired Fluency KK.OA.5Add/subtract within 5 11.OA.6Add/subtract within 10 22.OA.2 2.NBT.5 Add/subtract within 20 Add/subtract within 100 (paper and pencil) 33.OA.7 3.NBT.2 Multiply/divide within 100 Add/subtract within 1000 (paper and pencil) 44.NBT.4Add/subtract within 1,000,000 (paper and pencil) 55.NBT.5Multi-digit multiplication (paper and pencil) 66.NS.2 6.NS.3 Multi-digit division (paper and pencil) Multi-digit decimal operations (paper and pencil) 77.EE.4aSolve linear equations like px + q = r and p(x + q) = r 88.EE.8bSolve simple 2 X 2 linear systems by inspection (paper and pencil)

K-2 progressions example KindergartenFirst GradeSecond Grade K.OA.2 – Solve addition and subtraction word problems and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem. 1.OA.1 – Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. 2.OA.1 – Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Changes in Courses for High School Many concepts fro current Algebra 1 course will be in CC 8 th grade math CC Algebra 1 more rigorous and will incorporate many concepts from current Algebra 2. Geometry changes the least but will include all of Trigonometry ADE will create 4 th year courses

PARCC Assessment of CC Math 2014-2015 – Assessments in math and literacy for grades 3-high school. Some end of course assessments in math and literacy… Online for grades 6 – high school “Enhanced” multiple choice when year is 90% complete “Performance assessment” that will measure concepts, content and math practices

Transition for Parents PIN nights need to give more information about actual content/activities in class Parents can help with fluency in math Help parents understand rigor Websites on book mark www.jonesborocommoncore.wikispaces.com
