Accomplishments Increased number of jobs over 170,000 since January 2003 Allocated $2 million in the 2005-07 budget for the WTCS workforce advancement training grants Under the leadership of CWI, over $900,000 in grants were made over the last 2 years. Rank 2 nd nationally in the percentage of total jobs that are manufacturing Exports increased by 17.5% to a record $14.9 billion in 2005, compared to a 10.6% national increase One of only seven states to make the Corporation for Enterprise Development Honor Roll

7. Initiative Goals Build partnerships between businesses and schools so that students are trained for the high tech job market. Invest in high tech and high wage industries. Raise standards in schools and prepare our workforce for the jobs of tomorrow.

Industry Priorities Biotechnology – Wisconsin’s biotech industry employs nearly 30,000 people and produces $8 billion in sales Renewable Energy – It is estimated that there will be 17,000 renewable energy jobs created in Wisconsin by 2012 Manufacturing – From 2002 to 2012, the number of new manufacturing jobs in Wisconsin is estimated to increase by 8,600 jobs

9. Initiative Components Prepare our youth for the careers of tomorrow Increase the number of skilled workers in Wisconsin Advancing our manufacturing tradition

10. Preparing our youth YA program has earned national recognition as a leading education reform 64% of 2000-2003 YA graduates that were surveyed completed post-secondary education. In the 2004-05, there were nearly 2,000 YA students through the state. Governor’s Proposal: increase state investment from $1.1M annually to $2.2M annually

11. Preparing our youth cont. Wisconsin graduation requirements are behind other states and other countries. Governor’s Proposal: make a 3 rd year of science and a 3 rd year of math mandatory for high school graduation.

12. Increasing # skilled workers 2005-06 WTCS used $2M to train 11,900 Wisconsin employees throughout the state through their workforce advancement training program Governor’s Proposal: increase investment by $6M over the biennium.  Training 36,000 additional Wisconsin workers

13. Increasing # skilled workers cont. Goal – To have 40% of Wisconsin’s production workers MSSC certified by 2016. Governor’s Proposal: Allocate $250,000 in WIA funds to increase the number of MSSC assessment centers and assessment tests available to Wisconsin employers and workers.

14. Increasing # skilled workers cont. Need to address the skill needs in the biotechnology, renewable energy and manufacturing fields. Governor’s Proposal: Allocate $850,000 of WIA funds to create an Emerging Industries Skills Partnership program.

Manufacturing, biotechnology and renewable energy Manufacturing - Creation of a $1.5M Get LEAN program Biotechnology - $5M to find, recruit and fund stem cell companies Renewable energy - $80M in grants, loans and tax incentives for companies and researchers to increase and develop renewable fuels and technologies.

16. Conclusion Jobs for the Future - key component to the accomplishing the Governor’s economic and workforce goals. Will make sure that there are enough jobs for our young people and ensure that our workers are prepared for those jobs. Continued commitment and work of CWI is critical to make sure that this initiative is a success.
