9 The Four Stages of Food Processing Ingestion is another word for eating. Digestion is the breakdown of food into molecules small enough for the body to absorb. 46 The Large Intestine The large intestine is –shorter, but wider, than the small intestine and –about 1.5 meters in length. Question: How does a small change in DNA cause such a large change in the body?
