2 Traditional Breakfast & Lunch Breakfast: Steamed rice- which is the most basic food in Japan Miso soup -seasoned with bean paste and tofu Tamagoyaki ( たまごやき ) is a rolled omelet made of eggs. Asazuke ( あさずけ ) Pickles not as salty as our pickles Natto ( なっと )are fermented soy beans. Very strong in taste and smell. Eaten raw and cooked. Lunch: Obento( おべんと ) very popular for lunches たまごやき

3 Traditional Dinner Kaiseki( かいせき ) dinner can have 6-15 different dishes. This is a fancy dinner they only have once in a while. Examples; rice ( ごはん ) miso soup Hassun (はっすん) -food from mountain and the sea Shiizakana (しいざかな) -which are appetizers served with sake Nabemono (なべもの) - Japanese hot pot Yakimono (やきもの) – grilled fish Suimono ( すいもの) - a soup Ichiju-sansai is popular for dinner. It means 1 soup and 3 sides. It either has soba, rice bowl, udon. Usually has miso soup and has 3 different side dishes. Example- raw fish, (さしいみ) simmered vegetables, grilled chicken.

4 Manners Before they start eatting, they say いただきます which means I humbly receive. Its bad manners to burp. It is rude to use the hot towels to wash face or any part of the body, other then hands. Bowls may be lifted to the mouth, but not touched. The only exception is drinking soup. Soya sauce is usually not poured over most foods at the table, except for some. A dipping dish is usually provided. It is considered rude to waste soy sauce. Chopsticks should never vertically stick into the rice, because incense sticks are placed in sand vertically for offerings to the deceased. You must eat what you are given, to the last grain of rice. If you are picky eater you maybe be frowned upon. When drinking alcohol instead of pouring your own drink, you should keep others full before your own.

5 Modern food In Japan, now a days you can find more of an international variety cuisine, such as Italian pizza and pasta, there a fast food places such as McDonalds and Burger King, Chinese food is also popular. Western food ( よしょくりょうり) has turned more Japanese in Japan, as it would be different in Canada. You can also find ethnic food such as Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese food. Kyaraben ( きゃらべん ) is a fancy Obento, theyt are made to look like manga and cartoon characters.

6 Sushi Bar One of the most popular type of Japanese sushi bars is a conveyor belt sushi bar. It contains a variety of sushi, drinks, fruit. A conveyor belt sushi bar, is when the dishses of food are put on a rotating belt that circles around the restaurant and moves past all the tables. For billing, each plate is a different color, or has a design and that’s how they tell by the prices of that meal. The prices are usually ranging from 100-500 yen. Generally if a plate has no design or color means that it will be cheaper then food on a colorful plate.
