Drill #22* Find each sum or difference: 1. 2. 3.

Adding and Subtracting Rationals Adding pie pieces Taking half of the pie …

2-6 Multiplying Rational Numbers Objective: To multiply rational numbers

Classwork (#22*) 2-6 Practice # 1, 2, 3 *you can write on the worksheet.

Multiplying Two Rational Numbers The product of two numbers having the same sign is positive. The product of two numbers having the opposite sign is negative. (+)(+) = +(-)(+) = - (-) (-) = +(+)(-) = -

Count the negatives A good rule to use when multiplying rational numbers: Count the number of negative numbers being multiplied: If the number is even the product is positive (+) (two negatives cancel each other out) If the number is odd the product is negative (-)

Multiplicative Property of -1 **(17.) Definition: The product of any number and -1 is its additive inverse. -1(a) = -a and a(-1) = -a What property is this similar to?

Multiplying Rational Numbers **(16.) When multiplying rational numbers: 1 st Convert all mixed fractions to improper fractions. (and integers to fractions with a denominator of 1) 2 nd Multiply all the numerators together 3 rd Multiply all the denominators together 4 th Reduce! Reduce! Reduce! 5 th Assign a positive or negative value (count the negative signs)

Example: Find the product:

Reducing Fractions To reduce a fraction: Rewrite the numerator and denominator as a product of prime numbers (draw a factor tree) Cancel all common factors from the numerator and denominator Calculate the numerator and denominator again

Example: Reduce: a.42 / 56 b.- 18 / 54

Classwork (#22*) Reduce the following fractions: 4. 5. 6.

Classwork (#21*) 2-6 Practice #13 - 21

Homework Pass The 1 st to complete 2-6 with no mistakes…
