The Fruit & Vegetable business is not a national, but a global business with suppliers from all parts of the world, which need to make efficient trade. There is a need to build a common European framework to ensure alignment in the implementation of GS1 Standards and avoid divergences in the deployment of the GS1 System: Common European platform to gather and share European requirements One European voice in global standardisation and coordination. Participation of industry (Producer, supplier, retailer) and associations (GS1, Frug I Com, IFPS etc.). Common implementation guidelines across Europe.

The GLN can be used to identify physical locations and legal entities where is a need to retrieve pre-defined information to improve the efficiency of communication with the supply-chain. Global Location Numbers are a prerequiste for electronic commerce messages or to access information from the Global data synchronisation network
