Summary of the AWAKE Technical Board Meeting September 2014 – March 2015

Technical Board Meetings 5 th TB: 24 September 2014 (Greifswald) – Vacuum design status and issues, Plasma cell status, Proposal of TRIUMF contribution TRIUMF joins AWAKE Collaboration Issues for vacuum: vacuum specifications, vacuum separation window Start of discussions with plasma cell company (GRANT): e.g. clean plasma cell delivered in Feb 2015 2

Technical Board Meetings 6 th TB: 6 November 2014 – New vacuum separation window, impact on RP, impact on spectrometer, Layout of common proton and electron beam-line, plasma cell integration, planning  Vacuum requirement specification  decision on vacuum window: 0.2mm Al. Factor 20 lower background. No absorber downstream the window.  Definition of plasma cell: 12m (10+2m), move plasma cell by 2m.  integration of plasma cell and common proton and electron beam-line 3

Technical Board Meetings 7 th TB: 12 December 2014 – Vacuum simulation results, electron spectrometer magnet, proton beam line optics, updated layout of the AWAKE area, RF synchronization update, plasma cell alignment.  HB4 magnet will be used as electron spectrometer  streak camera optical line to be defined  layout downstream the plasma cell  first ideas on the plasma cell support 4

Technical Board Meetings 8 th TB: 12 February 2015 – Status of e-beam magnets, update on e-spectrometer, update on RF synchronization, plasma cell measurements, RP maps, planning  Strategy for laser dump design/production/payment  plasma cell support responsibilities defined  Updated realistic planning for plasma cell: clean plasma cell delivered in July 2015.  layout of RF signal generation and distribution for AWAKE  electron line magnet design  RF signal requirements  Triumf magnets for electron line  compressor design  Electron spectrometer vacuum window  Shielding for AWAKE experimental area  BI planning 5

Technical Board Meetings 9 th TB: 11 March 2015 – CSR preparation, BTVs and light transmission, TRIUMF status, Update on integration, electron source performance, laser dump, Safety files  Compressor design defined  RF signal requirements  TRIUMF: BPM design for 40mm completed, approved in February. 60mm design underway  Cockcroft contributions to emittance diagnostics  80% of the descriptive part of the safety file is done  demonstrative part by October 2015  Streak camera position to define  e-spectrometer optical line, proton beam halo measurements. 6

AWAKE Technical Board Issues are well followed up Collaboration between the different work packages has strongly improved – Still room for more involvement Many iterative meetings in between the TB  leads to conclusions in TB Minutes are an extremely useful tool to track actions and decisions. – Read them carefully! Planning is updated and available 8
