By Mrs. Keesee’s Third Grade Class

What am I? I start out with a center that is creamy white, Yet after time spent in the briny deep, My center is green and I have quite a bite. Outside viewInside view

Did you guess correctly? I am a Heinz Genuine Dill Pickle. Complete picture of pickle here.

The Heinz Company is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is the most global of all U.S. based food companies. Some of our favorite Heinz products are ketchup, baked beans, and pickles.

I keep small creatures safe and warm, I am a haven for many during a storm. I am one of Pennsylvania’s state symbols. What am I?

Did you guess correctly? I am a hemlock tree.

The wood obtained from hemlocks is important to the lumber industry. The bark of the hemlock is also used in tanning leather. The needles of the Hemlock tree are sometimes used to make a tea.

Am I a crystal? That remains to be seen. I can be crunchy or chewy, And I’m really quite sweet. I, too, am one of Pennsylvania’s state symbols. What am I?

Were you able to guess what I am? I am a chocolate chip cookie.

In 1996 a group of 4 th graders from Coatesville started proceedings to make the chocolate chip cookie a state symbol.

I flow like a river. I contain important minerals and vitamins. Enjoy me frosty or steamy. I am another of Pennsylvania’s state symbols. What am I?

I’m also important to bones & teeth. Did you guess that I’m milk? The black speck on the other slide is a chocolate chip floating in the milk. That made it easier to focus the microscope. Plus, it was fun to dunk a cookie in milk.

Did you know that Pennsylvania is one of the leading producers of dairy products in the United States? PA is also the second largest maker of ice cream.

I spend summers in Pennsylvania. I am not a mosaic tile picture. I am covered in scales, but am not in the reptile family. I love pollen and plants.

Were my clues helpful? I am a butterfly.

Butterflies are characterized by their scale colors. Some people say that when a butterfly lands on you it means good luck.

Thank you for viewing our informative riddles. A very special thanks to Toshiba America Foundation and SECEF. They provided grants for us to purchase USB microscopes. We’ve had lots of fun investigating PA state symbols and other items from Pennsylvania.
