Activities Educational software Tutorial case studies Short courses and workshops Educational sessions (e.g. at ESCAPE meetings) Student contest problems Questionnaires Actions financed from the available budget

Software for Teaching Provide the members with software tools at reduced prices and/or more acceptable licensing terms Currently around 20 computer packages are on the EURECHA supported software list Exchange of software between universities Promote development of new software in academia

Two new educational software Actions financed from the available budget: Code for assessing chemical unit investment costs CostEval, Prof. Valentin Plesu University “Politehnica” of Bucharest, Romania A section “Software” on the EURECHA web page: BzzMath 5.0 by Prof. G Buzzi-Ferraris.

Case Studies for Tutorials 6 case studied are available Problem specification (available for all) Detailed solutions (just for members) Can be downloaded from the EURECHA home page

Activities (cont.) Co-organization of Courses and Workshops NEW: one or two day workshop at ESCAPE 16, end of May 2006, Germany

Activities (cont.) Organization of Educational Sessions at ESCAPE symposiums, examples: Standards for units of quantities (P. Glavič) Case studies for tutorials (G. Heyen) Educational software (I. T. Cameron) Advanced Process Systems Engineering (I. E. Grossmann) EFCE Recommendations for Chemical Engineering Education in a Bologna Two Cycle Degree System Dr. Martin Molzahn, chairman of the EFCE WP on Education Contents of an International Master program in PSE/CAPE Dr. Andrzej Kraslawski Contents of an International PhD-course series in PSE/CAPE Dr. Michael Georgiadis Can be downloaded from EURECHA web page

Activities (cont.) Student contest problem 2004: “Design of a solvent recovery plant” 2005/06: defined in the autumn and announced at the beginning of 2006 (AWARD 1000 EUR)

Activities (cont.) Questionnaires: Monitor the degree of computer application in- and outside of academia Select software to be promoted and negotiated for discount price

Past and Scope of Future activities Since 1983 the mission has remained the same 3 decades of promoting the use of computers: from very enthusiastic beginning to the current maturity (sophisticated methods and software) Scope of Chemical Engineering has grown too: from conventional Chemical Engineering to Product, Environmental (Sustainable), Biochemical, Food Engineering Life Sciences are increasingly more integrated in our study programs.

Past and Scope of Future activities (c.) EURECHA is adapting to new conditions: Widening scope of EURECHA activities. Promote development and exchange of new software. Especially for topics that have not gained adequate support from professional developers. Aid to the implementation of Bologna process. ”LEARNING OUTCOMES” related to the use of computers, e.g. ability of: using basic existing software at the first cycle using advanced software at the second cycle and innovative development of new software at the PhD cycle.
