2 Bell Ringers Look at the map on page 206. What does the picture suggest about the involvement of civilians of the war? Look at the heading on page 207.what does the word Guerrilla mean? Given the picture and this word, what changes in the way the war was fought this section describe?

3 Savannah and Charles Town
Why did their victories in the North bring the British no closer to winning the war? It brought them no closer to winning the war because they didn’t have enough troops to control over the land. Although the British believed that if they would gain land in the South, then the Loyalists could hold the land for them.

4 What considerations led the British to shift their forces to the South?
The considerations that led the British to shift their forces to the South it that the Southerners were Loyalists.

5 Why was the defeat at Charles Town the worst American disaster of the war?
It was the worst of war because they lost almost their entire army. 5,000 defenders surrendered after they trapped American forces in Charles Town.

6 The Swamp Fox and Guerrilla Fighting
What objectives did General Gates and Baron de Kalb have? General Gates had to form a new Southern army he added about 2,000 new and untrained militia. Baron de Kalb formed the army’s core. General Gates Baron de Kalb

7 Why was the battle and Camden Important?
It was important because General Gates ended up becoming head of an army and caused American spirits to fall to a new low.

8 What contributions did Francis Marion make to the war effort in the South?
He gave General Gates helpful knowledge of South Carolina’s costal swamplands. Marion's men cut down the British supply line. He used the method of a guerrilla.

9 The Tide Turns What major factors led Washington to name a new commander in the South? He put Nathaniel Greene in charge because he was his most able officers. He also avoided full scale battles. When they did fight, they tried to make them suffer heavy losses.

He avoided full-scale battles with the British because he was a pacifist; he was opposed to war.

11 How did the course of the war affect public opinion in Britain?
It affected the British because they had to suffer heavy losses.

12 The End of the War Why did Cornwallis establish his base of operations at Chesapeake Bay? The army could receive supplies shipped from New York.

13 How did the French and the Americans cooperate military to defeat Cornwallis?
They blocked Chesapeake bay so they wont be able to get their supplies and from escaping from them.

14 Key Terms Lord Cornwallis – British general who fought against Horatio Gates. Guerrillas – small bands of fighters who weaken the enemy with surprise raids and hit-and-run attacks. Pacifist – a person who is normally opposed to war. Battle of Yorktown – it was the last major battle of the Revolutionary War, which resulted in the surrender of British forces in 1781.
