2 What is the problem? Homophobia has violent consequences Affects performance of LGBT players Intimidating for fans, not only LGBT fans

3 History of EGLSF EGLSF founded in the Netherlands in 1989 EGLSF is the European advocate for Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people in sport in Europe. Started mainly with groups from western Europe

4 History of EGLSF In 21 years expanded to 100 member groups representing 20,000 LGBT athletes. Member clubs in Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Ukraine, Poland and Russia.

5 Work with FARE Since 2002 co-operation with FARE, as core-partner in the admin group and now represented on Board Barcelona 2006 EGLSF workshop on homophobia in sport at UEFA conference Barcelona 2009 conference of LGBT Football fan groups Berlin 2010 conference of fans groups & activists

6 Achievements Since 1999 EGLSF has had consultative and later participative status with Council of Europe Lobbied Sports Ministers throughout Europe on recommendations to tackle homophobia in football. Raised awareness and tackled invisibility of LGBT people in football

7 Achievements 2009 ‘Declaration of Copenhagen’ – addendum to the Yogyakarta Principles on the application of international human rights law in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity in sport. Sanctioning of coaches and players for homophobic remarks.

8 Football For Equality Fund 2010 Slovenia – a public awareness campaign for students about racism & homophobia in sport. Poland – Anti-discrimination foosball tournament for young people Germany – Football kit carrying anti- discrimination messages.

9 Football For Equality Fund 2010 Germany – student anti-homophobia campaign UK – football tournament hosted by gay club. Spain – anti-discrimination campaign targeting two professional matches. Ireland – a street football tournament

10 Future Goals Reach fans in stadiums. Extend our work to other FA’s. Through our status within EPAS to challenge homophobia in all sports. Anti-homophobia campaign during 2011 Women’s World Cup and EURO 2012.
