Lesson 1: Heliocentric & Geocentric Models
Standard S6E1.a Relate the Nature of Science to the progression of basic historical scientific theories (geocentric and heliocentric) as they describe our solar system and the Big Bang as it describes the formation of the universe.
3
Lesson 2: Our Position in the Solar System
Standard S6E1.b Describe the position of the solar system in the Milky Way galaxy and the universe.

Theory that the universe was produced by a great explosion.
Big Bang Theory that the universe was produced by a great explosion. Now begins the story of our universe & solar system…
7
Inside our universe…..

Helium + Hydrogen =
9
After Big Bang, the universe was created.
There were gases called helium and hydrogen that were left over. 200 million years later, these gases came together to form the first stars
10
We live in one of these galaxies.
Gravity drew these stars together into families of stars called GALAXIES We live in one of these galaxies.

There are galaxies…. Gravity

Galaxy That’s how the universe and galaxies like our Milky Way formed… but what about our solar system?

Clumps of material began to form in the center of the spinning matter. Gravity drew more and more material in ward. As the clump grew larger, so did the amount of pressure, which created tremendous amounts of heat. This formed our sun. During the next million years, grains of dust around the sun collided into one another. Many stuck together and eventually formed the 9 planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and space rocks.

There are 300 billion stars in this galaxy.
Milky Way Galaxy There are 300 billion stars in this galaxy. Our sun is one of them.
27
Galaxy This is the Milky Way Galaxy.
Our solar system is inside the Milky Way galaxy.
28
Galaxy The Milky Way Galaxy has a spiral shape. It is shaped like a giant flattened disk with a bulge in the middle (think of a fried egg sunny-side up).
29
Galaxy Where are we? Our sun and solar system is on one of the outer arms of the Milky Way galaxy.

How BIG is our galaxy? 100,000 light years in diameter What is a lightyear? : distance light travels in a year. In km… 1 ly=9.5 trillion, billion km.

Astronomical unit: distance between the sun and the Earth. (150,000,000 km)

Heliocentric Model
39
The idea that the objects in the solar system revolve around the Sun.
Heliocentric Model The idea that the objects in the solar system revolve around the Sun. “Helios” in Greek = sun (Made sense, sun rose the east and set in the west).
40
The idea that the objects in the solar system revolve around Earth.
Geocentric Model The idea that the objects in the solar system revolve around Earth. “Geo” in Greek= Earth

For centuries people believed that ___________ revolved around ___________.
This was the ____________ Model.
45
__________was the first scientist to think that the sun was the center of the solar system.
46
_________ tested this theory, observing Jupiter and Venus.
_________ concluded that the sun was the center of the solar system.
