1 2011 Knapp Elementary Science Night Workshops Workshops listed are committed to Science Night as of the date of publication. We cannot be responsible for cancellations due to circumstances beyond our control. 1. The Spring Sky Comes in Doors Presentation of an indoor portable planetarium. Visualize the constellations as the Greeks related them through the Greek myths and see how the stars were used for travels. Wayne Wylie - Merck 2. Wild Blue Yonder Join Mr. Wild as he teaches how to make a simple catapult glider, and then learn how to adjust and fly it. High flying fun! Gerry Wild, Knapp Elementary School 3. What Runs with the Water? A hands-on model of our community will show the causes of water pollution and erosion. Children will then test different ideas to keep our streams and water supply clean. Marianne Morgan - North Penn Water Authority 11. We Share One World Did you ever notice the hawks that soar over Knapp? A hawk and an owl are dropping into a Knapp classroom. Learn how a group of caring people help wildlife that are injured and then work to return the recovered animals to their natural habitats. Balloon Rocket Work together as a family to build a balloon rocket and compete with other families to come the closest to the mark while learning about cause and effect. Learn more about your strongest muscle and the different ways a paramedic checks if your heart is working properly. Volunteer Medical Service Corps 9. Fun Food Tests Who decides what foods are sold in the stores? You do in this product test workshop where you evaluate foods with your senses: look, smell, taste, feel and sound. Learn about the exciting world of Marketing and Sensory Science. Payal Kondisetty, Research Consultant 7. Birds of a Feather How have birds evolved to survive? You will look at the adaptations various birds have to carry out their life activities. Melody Leithold - North Penn High School 8. Symmetry in Action You’ve been studying symmetry in math, now see it in action. Can you find the symmetry in common objects? What are the applications in engineering, life sciences and chemistry? This workshop will concentrate on two of the most easily applied symmetry elements, reflection and rotational axes. John E. Mills 10. Insects – More than just 6-Legs Together we will get up close to some insects to discover their fascinating adaptations. Microscopes, an activity and some great information will round out a great time for all you bug loving folks. Gail Hill - Peace Valley Nature Center 6. Take a Look Within Take a journey inside the human body and check out the organs that make you tick. Explore some common misconceptions about their size, location and reasons for being there.
