UCMS Digital Library Collection Established 2013-14
2
How did UCMS get so lucky? UCMS had grant money to use for technology. During 2012-13, we purchased three iPad carts with 25 iPads per cart, for teachers to checkout and use for instruction. This year, we created a digital library using OverDrive.
3
What is a Digital Library? Our OverDrive digital library is a website that allows UCMS students 24/7 online access to a digital collection of eBooks. http://union.lib.overdrive.com
4
What is an eBook? An eBook is an electronic or digital copy of a fiction or non-fiction book.
5
How many eBooks? Our collection currently has over 180 titles for students to choose from, as well as the classic books from Project Gutenberg. This new service, powered by OverDrive, is free for our students.
6
Free and Easy! Students can browse the collection, borrow with their user name and password, and enjoy on their computer, tablet, smartphone or eReader device. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the two-week lending period. There are no late fees and no lost books!
7
Sign Me Up! For students to be added into the digital library, they will first need to take care of a few things.
8
Steps for Student Access Step 1: Students sign up and receive an information packet with permission forms. (These are available from Mrs. Gain as well as on the UCMS library webpage.) http://union.kyschools.us/domain/596 Step 2: Students return the signed forms to Mrs. Gain.
9
Steps for Student Access Step 3: Mrs. Gain will pull students who returned their signed forms for an introductory session of the Digital Drivers’ License Course (DDL) if they wish to use the digital library on their own device here at school. Step 4: Students will be given access for use of the Digital Library at home if they choose not to pursue a DDL.
10
Steps for Student Access Step 5: Students notify Mrs. Gain when they have successfully completed the DDL Course. (They can complete at their own pace at outside of school) Step 6: Mrs. Gain will give the student a form to fill out at home, giving their device’s wireless information.
11
Steps for Student Access Step 7: Students return the wi-fi form to Mrs. Gain. Step 8: UCPS technology staff pick up the forms from UCMS on Mondays. By the following Monday, the student will have their DDL Card.
12
Steps for Student Access Step 9: The student will be given their Digital Library Card and a flyer with eBook download instructions for their particular type of device. (Nook, Kindle, Android, iPad, iPhone, etc.)
13
Steps for Student Access Step 10: Students can enjoy eBooks 24/7 from the Union County Middle School OverDrive Digital Library. Since it is accessed through a website, students can even access it over the summer - no matter where they are!!
