5 Writing Prompt Let’s say you own an apartment complex. You invite people to rent out rooms in your apartment complex, but you obviously have rules you expect them to follow. Things are going well at first as people start moving in. However, these people moving in are really starting to cause problems for you, not following the rules, and costing you money. How would you try and fix this situation with your renters? Remember: You own the place, and you want to keep making money. What’s the best way to make sure of that?

6 Backstory In the 1820s, Mexico encouraged American citizens to move to the Mexican territory of Texas. Thousands of Anglos (white, English-speaking colonists) moved in. Mexico gave them the land at a very cheap price, and the Anglo’s pledged to follow the laws of Mexico. Tensions developed as the population grew: Religion/Slavery issues. Many colonists wanted greater self-government. Mexico refused. Stephen Austin, a leading Anglo, encouraged a revolt against Mexico in 1835.

9 Aftermath Mexico gave up land from California to Texas once they were defeated in the Mexican- American War Caudillos continued with unpopular policies that angered regular Mexican’s. “Pancho” Villa and Emiliano Zapata: Different from other Mexican leaders because they came from poor backgrounds. Both wanted laws passed that protected peasants and small farmers. – Mexican Constitution of 1917
