NOTES Ch /9 Brain tests and problems

4 Tests 1. EEG (electroencephalogram)
procedure that records the brain’s electrical activity

5 2. CAT (computer assisted tomography)
form of imaging that used computers to construct 2D pictures. Dye may be injected to get a better picture.

6 3. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
imaging the brain using a strong magnet, no radiation

7 4. Neurosonography uses ultra high frequency sound waves to analyze blood flow to brain (stroke)

8 Problems

9 LOBOTOMY Removal of part of the brain
1935’s – used to control patients with high aggression; mostly in insane asylums Gave personality changes Stopped in the 1950’s

10 Between 1939 and 1951, more than 18,000 lobotomies were performed in the United States, and tens of thousands more in other countries. It was widely abused as a method to control undesirable behavior, instead of being a last-resort therapeutic procedure for desperate cases. In Japan, the majority of the operated cases were children, many of whom had only problematic behavior or a bad performance at the school. Inmates in prisons for the insane were widely operated. Families trying to get rid of difficult relatives would submit them to lobotomy. Rebels and political opponents were treated as mentally deranged by authorities and operated.

11 DEMENTIA Loss of intellectual ability

12 COMA Unconscious condition in which a person does not respond to stimuli

13 CONCUSSION A bruise on the brain
Head hit hard, brain bumps against skull inside Can damage area hit temporarily or permanently

14 BRAIN HEMORRAGE Internal bleeding in the brain
Can cause pressure on the brain; damage

16 OTHER BRAIN PROBLEMS Asphasia TBI Epilepsy Cerebral palsy Stroke
