E-Portfolios as a Hiring Tool for Pre-Service Teachers PT3 Faculty Conference, 2004 Professors Lynn Keyne-Michaels, Jonathan Leonard, Lynne Wolters Concordia University

Project Need Having heard anecdotal stories, both positive and negative, about the use and acceptance of electronic portfolios as a tool in the hiring process of pre-service teachers, this project focused on: 1.Survey of selected building principals 2.Curriculum review process including the identification of appropriate e-portfolio artifacts 3.Pilot of MAT students creating professional teaching electronic portfolios tailored to showcase artifacts from their program of study and focused as hiring tool for these pre-service teachers.

Survey of Principals 3 Elementary 3 Middle School 1 High School

Survey Results (1) If first year teaching candidates interviewing for positions in your building/district presented CDs with their electronic portfolios, would you: ELEMSHS View the portfolios at the interview time 1 View the portfolios at a later time 33 Not view the portfolios at all

Survey Results (1) Comments “Would view portfolios that were done well.” “Would view at time of interview if they bring a laptop.” “If he knew the individual was coming in and had hardware, he’d view it right then – would prefer to have it before the interview.”

Survey Results (2) If a prospective teacher candidate presented a CD with an electronic portfolio during an interview, what role would that portfolio play in your hiring decision? ELEMSHS The portfolio would play a significant role 1 The portfolio would be of moderate value 33 The portfolio would play no role at all in the hiring process

Survey Results (2) Comments “Not hard to look at.” “If I have a reservation about their skill.” “Significant to moderate value depending on the content and the quality of the electronic document. A sloppy or low quality product would put me off just like a sloppy resume.”

Survey Results (3) Would you be more likely to view the portfolio: ELEMSHS On-line 1 11 CD 22

Survey Results (3) Comments “Online viewing – I won’t do it – requires more work.” “Doesn’t matter”

Survey Results (4) Would electronic portfolios give job candidates an edge in a “tie” for a position? ELEMSHS Yes 2 2 No 1 1

Survey Results (4) Comments “Yes, gives more information – could be pro/con” “It could” “Again, it would depend on the quality of the product but it would certainly signal some valuable technology experience.” “Yes, if the other person didn’t have it or some other kind of portfolio.”

Survey Results (5) If interviewing a veteran candidate (3 or more years experience) would an e-portfolio play any role in the hiring decision-making process? ELEMSHS Yes 2 31 No

Survey Results (5) Comments “Piece of puzzle/fuller picture.” “Maybe” “I’d love to see a demonstration lesson focused don the students and their reaction to a lesson.” “Possibly” “Veterans should be up to speed with technology and they should have a collection of evidence for a portfolio.”

Survey Results (6) Do you think electronic portfolios will play a role in the interview process in the future? ELEMSHS Yes 2 31 No

Survey Results (6) Comments “Possible-quality of the applicant.” Yes, and it would make the recordkeeping / comparison process so much easier.” “Yes, absolutely.”

Survey Results (7) Which of the following artifacts would you expect to see? YesNo Resume43 Work Sample43 Video of the candidate teaching a lesson7 Assignments/projects from classes 00 Lesson plans52 Tests/assessment instruments34 Philosophy papers on a number of issues such as management/teaching25

Survey Results (7) Comments “Video!” “Other stuff doesn’t matter if on CD – prefer hard copies for committee members.” “Video with emphasis on the student response to a lesson.” “Resume & Work Sample – need hard copies, don’t want to print.” “Video is very important, very good.”

Survey Results (8) Have you ever encountered using electronic portfolios for hiring purposes in the past? ELEMSHS Yes 0 20 No 31 1

Survey Results (8) Comments “Video! Video! Video!” “If candidate brings an electronic portfolio I’d expect them to bring a laptop and projector with them. They shouldn’t assume I will have it readily available.” “It’s a concept – going to come to fruition soon. Another way to hire.”

E-Portfolio Pilots: What We Learned Format: ECE students prefer Word saved as Web Page utilizing design theme. Format: MS/HS students prefer PDF documents. Mixed success surrounding chosen navigation design. –Embedded links –PDF Bookmarks

E-Portfolio Pilots: What We Learned Developed (or lack thereof) design aesthetic dramatically affects output. Need for copyright free stock photos of young children and students in educational settings.

E-Portfolio Pilots: What We Learned Timing of portfolio development and ongoing support issues important to the final product outcome. Compatibility with student home resources a notable issue.
