DIS Multimedia Productions Video On Demand March 14th 9:30-10:15 AM

2 What is Video On Demand (VOD)?  VOD is a means of providing web-based video to your viewers when it is convenient for them.  Typical Uses:  Training  eLearning  Recruitment  New Employee Orientations  Director Messages/Mission Statements

3 Benefits of Streamed Video On Demand:  More effective communications.  Same tailored message goes to all viewers.  Get your message out to larger audiences, or a narrowly defined group.  Real-time access to information  Message available 24/7  Centralized information archive.  Leverage video material already produced.  Materials can be accessed from one web-based site.  Reduced costs when compared to traditional methods involving conferences, travel and per diem, printing costs, duplication and more.

4 Video Delivery on the Web  1) HTTP Downloading  2) Progressive Downloading – (Fast start, web streaming, etc)  3) True Streaming In General:  If content is less than 1Mb in size (10 - 30 seconds of video, depending on the encoding and the quality), downloading the video will not cause major slowdowns.  If content is over 5Mb in size (more than 5 - 8 minutes of video, depending on the encoding and the quality), true streaming is your best option.

5 Video Delivery on the Web  HTTP streaming – Downloading video from a web server  The entire file is saved on your computer which you then open and view. This has some advantages, such as not requiring a streaming server, but has the big disadvantage of having to wait for the whole file to download before any of it can be viewed.  HTTP streaming is not as efficient as true streaming and will incur a heavier server load.

6 Video Delivery on the Web  Progressive Downloading  There is also a hybrid method known as progressive download. In this method the video clip is downloaded but begins playing as soon as a portion of the file has been received. This simulates true streaming, but doesn't have all the advantages.

7 Video Delivery on the Web  Streaming  Streaming media works a bit differently — the end user can start watching the file almost as soon as it begins downloading. In effect, the file is sent to the user in a constant stream, and the user watches it as it arrives. The obvious advantage with this method is that no waiting is involved.  No files are downloaded to the viewer computer. The content is delivered in small packets which are used for immediate playback & then discarded. At the end of the video clip, there are no traces of the content left on the viewers computer.

8 Video Delivery on the Web  True streaming has advantages such as:  Deliver long form media.  The ability to handle much larger traffic loads.  Real-time access to information.  The ability to detect users' connection speeds and supply appropriate files automatically.  The ability to broadcast live events.
