13 The Winter Palace, the Hermitage, the Alexander Column The Winter Palace was built in the period of 1754 - 1762 by the project of the architect Rastrelli and appears to be a brilliant example of a splendid baroque style which dominated in Saint-Petersburg in the middle of the 18th century. And two years later straight near the Winter Palace there started the building of the Hermitage - a special construction designed for the placement of art collections. Those collections increased greatly that's why over the next few years several other buildings of the Hermitage were erected. Today the Hermitage together with Louvre in Paris is considered to be among the best museums of the whole world. It comprises a huge collection of paintings, sculptures and arts and crafts. In front of the Winter Palace in the center of the Palace Square rises the Alexander Column which was erected by the architect Oguste Montferran in honor of the emperor Alexander I, the victor of Napoleon. This column has its unique peculiarity because it is not dug into the soil and not fixed on the foundation, it holds on due to its own weight
