1 Good Morning Entry Task: Pull out your Bessie/Sadie and continue working on finding evidence from the novel to support your view. Please keep your quote journal and compare and contrast chart separate Place your reading quotes on the corner of your desk to be checked.

3 Having Our Say journal “It was bad enough to be discriminated against by white people because I was colored. But then, my own people would discriminate against me because I was a woman” (Delany 178). “ And I realized he didn’t want to work on her mouth because she was colored. So I said to him, ‘You are not a doctor of dentistry! You are a doctor of segregation!’ “ (Delany 179). “But if a Negro did something stupid or wrong, it was held against all of us. Negroes were always representing the whole race” (Delany 186).

4 Having Our Say journal (lead in) Bessie reflects on the discrimination she encounters not just by her ethnicity but also her gender,(Quote) “It was bad enough to be discriminated against by white people because I was colored. But then, my own people would discriminate against me because I was a woman” (Delany 178). (lead in) Bessie recalls when another dentist refers a patient to her because of the color of her skin, (Quote) “ And I realized he didn’t want to work on her mouth because she was colored. So I said to him, ‘You are not a doctor of dentistry! You are a doctor of segregation!’ “ (Delany 179). Write your own commentary

5 Writing In our last class we completed a prewrite for Embedded Assessment 1.1, your essay on two of your cultural aspects. Today we are going to write our final draft. You will need two pieces of notebook paper and a blue or black ink pen. You will not write your paper in pencil!

7 Writing your essay You have 45 minutes to complete the assignment: Skip Lines (every other line) Using your prewrite/graphic organizer write your four paragraph essay

8 Labeling your Essay Using the colored pencils label the elements of your paper. Make a key at the bottom of your paper. Thesis/Topic Sentence - Supports – Evidence – Commentary – Each element needs to be a different color.

9 Exit Task Reflect on the learning targets for today. Do you feel you met the targets? 1. Analyze how culture affects identity and perceptions 2.
