They often come from difficult backgrounds, both at school and at home. These young people are ‘not prepared’ and struggle to cope on a day to day basis. Northumberland Scouts is helping them to ‘become prepared’.

9 Current Projects Getting Connected: Big Lottery funded for 5 years Delivering to NEET’s (Not in Employment, Education or Training), School Inclusion and Youth Engagement Interventions of between 6 weeks and a full school year Geordie at War: Heritage Lottery funded for 18 months Delivering to similar groups through heritage and local culture Exploring the impact of conflict from Roman times through to the present day, including language, employment and communities

10 Ryan attends Geordie at War sessions once a week. In January Ryan would not take part in group activities, although he would always attend and watch. This caused some gripes amongst his peers. Eventually his peers came to understand Ryan’s needs and started to encourage and involve him more. Last month Ryan put on his overalls and work gloves for the first time and got stuck in. His support worker says : “Looking back Ryan would not do a thing no matter what we said, now he might have a little grumble then gets on with it, he has also mixed well with the group”.

11 Dan joined us on a 7 day John Muir Award programme Dan was an outcast at school with low self-esteem and poor confidence; he had a noticeable stutter that reflected his nervousness. During his time with Lookwide his relationship and involvement with the group improved greatly. To complete the John Muir Award Dan was required to stand up in front of 20 of his peer group as part of a presentation. Dan nearly pulled out, but the trusting relationship that he had developed with Stew allowed him to overcome his fears; he spoke confidently, expanded fluently on the written piece he had prepared, and didn’t stammer throughout.
