2 Today’s Goal: Learn to research holiday traditions by using the internet.
Outcomes: Locate three different websites to research the history behind a particular symbol or custom. Take notes by paraphrasing information from each website. Analyze their findings to determine whether the websites offer the same explanations. Evaluate which of the three websites are trustworthy sources of information. Explain how a particular holiday tradition began and name what country it originated in.

3 Starter#1: Look at the words below. What do they have in common?
Christmas tree Christmas tree lights Christmas cards Christmas gift giving Christmas stocking Christmas star Rudolph Saint Nick Santa Claus Mistletoe Poinsettia Wreaths Candy Canes Christmas tree ornaments These are all traditions related to Christmas.

4 Starter #2: Today we are to strategize in preparation for your “Internet Treasure Hunt.” This is a competitive activity, Red Team vs. Green Team. It’s also a timed activity, so you must be careful not to squander the time provided. When I call out your number, you will write down on your handout the Christmas symbol I assign you. Your goal is two-fold: 1) Find out how your symbol became a Christmas tradition. 2) Find out what country it originated in. However, to get points for your team, you must carefully follow the steps given on your sheet. The first step requires you to find three different websites that provide information about your topic. How will you do that? You must use a “search engine.” What’s a search engine? Can you give me some examples? Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Ask.com, are all search engines.

5 Starter #3: Let’s pretend that your Treasure Hunt requires you to research “Christmas tree ornaments.” Remember, you must find three different websites that provide the info you need. What words will you type into the search engine to find those websites?   You might type: Christmas tree ornaments tradition History of Christmas tree ornaments How did Christmas tree ornaments become a custom? After you find three websites, you must scan each web page article to find the info you need. What two questions are you trying to answer? Since this will be a timed, competitive activity, and we must share computers, you need a way to find the info quickly—you must scan the internet article to see if it contains what you need. Let’s go to Coach #8 for some tips on scanning articles
