Old Testament Citations in the Book of Mark OT ReferenceNT CitationSubject Matter Mal. 3:1; Isa. 40:3Mark 1:2-3John the Baptist 8

Malachi 3:1 Behold, I send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, whom ye desire, behold, he cometh, saith Jehovah of hosts. Isaiah 40:3 The voice of one that crieth, Prepare ye in the wilderness the way of Jehovah; make level in the desert a highway for our God. 9

John the Baptist Mark 1:1-3 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 Even as it is written in Isaiah the prophet, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way. 3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight; 10

Old Testament Citations in the Book of Mark OT ReferenceNT CitationSubject Matter Mal. 3:1; Isa. 40:3Mark 1:2-3John the Baptist Isaiah 6:9-10Mark 4:12Use of parables 11

Use of parables Isaiah 6:9-10 9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. 10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn again, and be healed. Note order: heart, ears, eyes – eyes, ears, heart From heart corruption flows to ears and eyes 12

Use of parables Mark 4:12 that seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest haply they should turn again, and it should be forgiven them. What about us today? Do we let our hearts draw us away? 13

Old Testament Citations in the Book of Mark OT ReferenceNT CitationSubject Matter Mal. 3:1; Isa. 40:3Mark 1:2-3John the Baptist Isaiah 6:9-10Mark 4:12Use of parables Isaiah 29:13Mark 7:6-7Empty ritualism 14

Empty ritualism Isaiah 29:13 And the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw nigh unto me, and with their mouth and with their lips to honor me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment of men which hath been taught them; 15

Empty ritualism Mark 7:6-7 6 And he said unto them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honored me with their lips, But their heart is far from me. 7 But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men. This is a real challenge for us today. 16

Old Testament Citations in the Book of Mark OT ReferenceNT CitationSubject Matter Mal. 3:1; Isa. 40:3Mark 1:2-3John the Baptist Isaiah 6:9-10Mark 4:12Use of parables Isaiah 29:13Mark 7:6-7Empty ritualism Exodus 20:12Mark 7:105 th Commandment 17

5 th Commandment Exodus 20:12 Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee. Mark 7:10 For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother; and, He that speaks evil of father or mother, let him die the death: This is one of Americas real problem. 18

Old Testament Citations in the Book of Mark OT ReferenceNT CitationSubject Matter Mal. 3:1; Isa. 40:3Mark 1:2-3John the Baptist Isaiah 6:9-10Mark 4:12Use of parables Isaiah 29:13Mark 7:6-7Empty ritualism Exodus 20:12Mark 7:105 th Commandment Ezekiel 12:2Mark 8:18Hardened hearts 19

Hardened hearts Ezekiel 12:2 Son of man, you dwell in the midst of the rebellious house, that have eyes to see, and see not, that have ears to hear, and hear not; for they are a rebellious house. Mark 8:18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? Notice how many times see and hear are used. 20

Old Testament Citations in the Book of Mark OT ReferenceNT CitationSubject Matter Mal. 3:1; Isa. 40:3Mark 1:2-3John the Baptist Isaiah 6:9-10Mark 4:12Use of parables Isaiah 29:13Mark 7:6-7Empty ritualism Exodus 20:12Mark 7:105 th Commandment Ezekiel 12:2Mark 8:18Hardened hearts Isaiah 66:24Mark 9:48Punishment of Hell 21

Punishment of Hell Isaiah 66:24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the dead bodies of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh. Mark 9:48 where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched. That’s a very sobering thought. 22

Old Testament Citations in the Book of Mark OT ReferenceNT CitationSubject Matter Mal. 3:1; Isa. 40:3Mark 1:2-3John the Baptist Isaiah 6:9-10Mark 4:12Use of parables Isaiah 29:13Mark 7:6-7Empty ritualism Exodus 20:12Mark 7:105 th Commandment Ezekiel 12:2Mark 8:18Hardened hearts Isaiah 66:24Mark 9:48Punishment of Hell Genesis 1:27; 2:24Mark 10:6-8Male and Female 23

Male and Female Genesis 1:27 And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 24

Male and Female Mark 10:6-8 6 But from the beginning of the creation, Male and female made he them. 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; 8 and the two shall become one flesh: so that they are no more two, but one flesh. 25
