1 Realism Movement of American Literature 1865-1915 Shannon Luster; 11 th grade English

2 1. The Civil War changes America. ► Prior to the Civil War, the country had an idealistic view of life. ► During the Civil War, people witnessed the brutality of war. People’s view of life changed. ► After the Civil War, the country became filled with poor factory workers in over- crowded cities.

3 2. Common Forms of Writing During the Civil War: ► Diaries ► Journals ► Letters between soldiers and families ► Newspaper articles ► *Novels about the Civil War were not written until years after the war was over. ► The greatest Civil War novel was The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane.

4 3. Characteristics of Realism 1. It rejects the idealized, Romantic hero. 2. It gives a detailed depiction of ordinary characters and realistic events. 3. There is an emphasis on characters from cities and lower classes. 4. It uses everyday speech patterns to reveal class distinction. 5. It focuses on the social issues of real-life situations.

5 4. Regionalism appears as part of the Realism movement. ► Regionalism is literature that emphasizes a specific geographic setting. ► It uses local color: to make use of speech patterns (dialect) and mannerisms of people who live in a particular region.

Naturalism appears as a part of the Realism movement. ► Naturalism is literature that dissects human behavior. ► These writers believe life is a losing battle. ► They portray nature as a relentless part of the world. ► Nature is not here for our amusement; it is cruel, and humans are disposable.

7 6.Mark Twain is the most famous American Regionalism writer. ► He uses a lot of local color in his works of literature. ► The local color establishes his works as works of satire: writing which ridicules some aspect of society.

8 7. “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” ► Mark Twain creates a frame story: a story within a story.  There is an outer story with its own characters, plot, and setting.  There is an inner story with its own characters, plot and setting. ► Tone is very important in this story. It is important that you recognizing the attitude of the narrators so as to determine which speakers are being sarcastic.
