The government helps meet the needs of unemployed people in several ways. Firstly, they try to meet their 1 needs by providing benefits to those looking for work. An example of a type of 2 is the 3. Women and Work Women make up 52% of the Scottish Population and make up a large proportion of the workforce. Despite this many women experience problems in relation to employment matters. Illegal- 1970 Equal Pay Act/ 1975 Discrimination Act.

But... Despite these laws and the fact that women are 50% of the workforce, women are much more likely to face employment problems. Why?

It’s a fact that there are just some jobs that women can’t do. Men are just stronger. They will take time off to look after sick children They will take time off to have children

The Government introduced this law in three stages: It was made illegal to treat disabled people less favourably because of their disability In 1999 businesses had to make reasonable adjustments for disabled staff, like providing additional support or equipment 2004 businesses had to make physical alterations to their premises to overcome access barriers

WHY? They will take more time off work They cannot do their job because of their disability. They will cost the business money- alter the premises to make wider doors etc. They are a danger to colleagues if there is an emergency like a fire.

Race and Unemployment Although racism is illegal in the UK, it stills exists because some people are prejudiced. Therefore employers may not employ people who are non white because they make certain assumptions against them such as: they may experience language difficulties cultural differences They may not work as hard They have lower qualifications

Older people are also affected by unemployment.There are several reasons for this, such as: employers may see them as ‘past their best’ they often lack the modern skills needed for today’s labour market younger workers may work for lower wages they are less likely to move to find or start work

There are many reasons why a disabled person may find it difficult getting a job. Firstly employers may have prejudice towards disabled people. An example of this type of prejudice would be when an employer would not want to hire someone with a disability as they think they might not be able to do the job properly.
