Aim: What was the legacy of Jefferson’s Presidency? Do Now: Use Jefferson’s letter to Merriwether Lewis below to answer the following questions

1) What are Lewis and Clark being provided with? 2) What is the goal of their expedition? 3) What type of information are they to gather on the Natives? The environment? Why would this be important

Lewis and Clark’s Expedition With a goal of mapping out the new American territory West of the Mississippi, Merriwether Lewis and William Clark would depart in 1804, under the name the Corps of Discovery, seeking to accomplish a number of goals for Jefferson: oDiscover a waterway linking traversing the entire continent East to West oMap the new territory for the United States oDocument any new plants or animals oEstablish trade relations with the Native Americas

Lewis and Clark’s Expedition The expedition would fail in their mission to find a water route across the country (they also didn’t expect the Rocky Mountains), but they did reach the Pacific Ocean, building the first fort for the United States (For Clatsop) in modern day Oregon

Lewis and Clark’s Expedition They also made contact with over 70 native American tribes and documents over 200 new plants and animals

Contact with Native Americans Early in the expedition, the Corps were joined by a French fur trader and his teenaged Shoshone wife, Sacagawea, who gave birth shortly after joining Sacagawea would serve as an interpreter, guide and intermediary when dealing with local tribes Why would this Native American teen and her child traveling with the expedition be so important to their success?

Corn Mill Miscommunications, Lewis and Clark National Bicentennial Exhibition

How did Lewis and Clark describe Native American women? How were women treated in Native American society? What gift was given to the Native Americans by the Corps?

How were Native American gender roles different than European? What mistake was made by the Corps with the gift? Do you think Native women or European women received “better” treatment? What does this story tell us about different societies gender roles?

Embargo Act of 1807 The Embargo Act of 1807 was a general Embargo (refusal to trade) with both France and Britain during the Napoleonic Wars

Causes oAmerican shipping would constantly be attacked and robbed by both French and British ships oImpressment: The British practice of attacking American ships and forcing alleged British deserters or American sailors into the British navy oChesapeake-Leopard Affair: American warship Chesapeake is attacked off the coast of Virginia by the British Leopard, with four sailors being taken (and one being hanged) oWidespread calls for war against the European powers in order to preserve American pride

Embargo Act of 1807 The Embargo Act was seen as a form of “economic warfare” by Jefferson, who sought to avoid military conflict The intended goal was to force the British and French to respect American sovereignty

Results Virtually no economic impact on Britain and France Widespread economic problems in the United States (especially in the North) The perception among European powers that the American form of government was weak and ineffectual

Embargo Act of 1807 Seeing the Act was a failure, it would be repealed in 1809, with the issue of impressment left unsolved How do you think the United States should deal with this issue?
