History of the KHS Website

1998-99 The high school site consisted of six static pages of information that had not been updated for six months Mrs. Santilli (then Assistant Principal) asked Mr. Continenza if he would take over responsibility for the site HIS RESPONSE: “I don’t know anything about websites, but I’ll give it my best shot.”

Eight dedicated seniors worked diligently on their own time to update the site, and teach Mr. Continenza what they knew about web design.

They won “Cool School of the Week” from Education World, and put KHS in the running to win the “Cool School of the Year” award during 1999-2000 The site grew to over 300 pages

Despite what we now consider as “awful” photographs, the Kenston community loved the website, and it was obvious it was here to stay Left: Trent Hilliar, 1,000+ pts. for KHS

1999-2000 Two dedicated and knowledgeable students and Mr. Continenza spent countless hours outside the school day developing the site L/R: Student Webmaster’s Brian Landel, Sarah Fugman, and Mr. Continenza

They were assisted by a handful of Web Builders, and approximately 30 student athletes reporting sports results via email when they returned home from competitions. Don Pavlish, a 1993 Kenston graduate and professional web designer offered consulting help with our design.

Their hard work began paying off as the WWW community noticed their dedication and the site began winning awards at a quick rate

The excitement rose in the entire Kenston Community when the judging and voting for BEST IN THE USA drew close… Our website received praises in every newspaper in the Cleveland area; radio and TV also gave our students “air time” as the National Contest drew to a close.

On March 15, 2000 we were named “Cool School of the Year” by Education World. 12:20 p.m. “Attention Teachers and Students; please excuse this interruption. We have just received word from Education World that we have won the Cool School of the Year award!...”

On April 14, 2000, CISCO Systems awarded us $10,000 for being “The Best High School Website in the United States of America.”

BEST IN THE USA! The amount of TV, radio, and newspaper coverage we received made all students involved with the site very proud, and the community as a whole. Click on image above to play TV News Channel 5 Broadcast

We received several proclamations from local, state, and national politicians:

Awards Ceremony A school-wide assembly was called to honor the Web Builders

KHS 93’ alumni Don Pavlish spoke at the awards ceremony: “…to me what's always been the most impressive thing about the Kenston site is the obvious dedication and passion that its Web Team has for it…”

The site had grown to 2,750 pages, and had over 10,000 color photographs. The celebration continued with a “Cool School” cookout and ice-cream days…

2000-2001 Curriculum was approved for a Web Design course. A computer lab was added to house the Web Design class (20 student machines). 40 students took the new elective. The site grew to over 3,000 pages and over 15,000 photographs. No major changes were made to the design, but a plan was underway for a new look.

Interest in the web class grew. 100 students were placed in five sections of the class. From September through December a major change in the design of the site was in progress. The new design gave the site an e- magazine look, and was now much easier to maintain. Mr. C. wrote a grant for a professional digital camera and was awarded $10,000. 2001-2002
