3 Blackboard at Northwestern A customer since 1999 Broad adoption among both faculty and students Over 2,100 courses using Bb per quarter But Bb alone is often no more than a mechanism to deliver documents -- built initially to solve the instructor's problem of delivering packaged information to students and aggregate student- created content for the instructor

4 Technology to support a new model Collaborative construction of new knowledge rather than relying on an instructor to drum information into students

5 Adopting a Collaboration Platform Google Apps for Education deployed at Northwestern in 2007 Objective #1: Fill a gap in providing email to students Objective #2: Find out whether the other Apps offer new options for student collaboration
