1 ExxonMobil Careers: Fuel For Thought
Good morning/afternoon. It’s a pleasure to be here. And I welcome this opportunity to tell you why you should consider a career with ExxonMobil.

2 Overview of ExxonMobil - Who are we and what do we do?
Choosing an employer, what should you look for? Some people believe that the petroleum industry is behind the times in technological advances. Nothing could be further from the truth. ExxonMobil’s longstanding commitment to technology has helped us meet the world’s need for energy and petrochemicals for more than 120 years. The ExxonMobil research program is the largest in our industry. We spend $600 million a year in research centers all over the world. And we do most of it in-house. We now employ around 1,900 PhDs in various disciplines around the world. To give you an idea of the scope of our research activity -- over the past 20 years ExxonMobil has been granted some 9,400 patents. That’s close to the number awarded to the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force combined. We currently have 1,200 patent applications under consideration. Typical I/T characteristics of a large company What characteristics do we look for?

Our 2001 net income of $15.3 billion made us the most profitable company in the Fortune Global 500. We are the world’s largest non-government producer of crude oil and natural gas, producing the equivalent of some 4.3 million barrels of oil a day. We’re one of the world’s top three petrochemical companies and among the largest independent producers of electricity. As I mentioned earlier, we have long been a leader in technology. In 1900, we established the industry’s first product-development laboratory. In 1938, we invented a new refining process that Fortune magazine called the most important chemical innovation in the first half of the 20th century. And thanks to technology breakthroughs, ExxonMobil is a leader in such gee-whiz activities as oil and gas development in waters more than 4,000 feet deep.

13 Choosing an employer... What should you look for ?
How is I/T valued in the company? - Primary purpose (ie, a technology or consulting company) - Integral to the business, but not primary purpose - Viewed as support Is the company on the leading edge of technology? Do you want to become (remain?) an expert in a single technology area? Geographic stability vs. geographic flexibility - Mandatory travel within a job - Job relocation throughout career Controlled work environment vs. flexible work environment

14 Choosing an employer... What do I look for ?
Will there be a variety of career options? - Within I/T - Opportunity to move into a business function What does the company offer financially? (Risk vs. Stability) - Base salary - Stock grants/options - 401(k) matches; retirement plans - Partnership What “extras” does the company offer? - Sponsor additional schooling - New hire activities/program (formal vs. informal)

15 Typical I/T characteristics of a “large, non-I/T” company
I/T viewed as integral to the business, but not the primary purpose of the company Technology Implementers of technology, not “creators” - Internal consultants to the business providing solutions to their specific problems - Technology is a business enabler Generally not leading edge - Often technology is several generations old - May be close to leading edge in some specialized areas - Work from a standard “technology set” Few true technology “experts” - Internal experts (advisors) rather than industry experts

16 Typical I/T characteristics, continued....
Career Lifecycle Not hired for a specific technical skill - Recruited based on overall abilities - Hired for the ability to learn rather than a specific skill set Job rotation early in your career - Shorter term (2-3 year) assignments - A wide variety of assignments/across business lines - Does not allow you to become/remain a technical expert early in your career Opportunity for management track or more technical track as career progresses - Length of assignment longer - Ability to focus on one technology area (advisor) Business area assignments

17 Typical I/T characteristics, continued....
Work Environment Structured/controlled work environment - Fixed set of technologies - Structured project lifecycle and approval process - High focus on security and controls Large projects/ wide scope Team oriented approach Geographic flexibility required - Travel requirements vary by job, but generally moderate at most - Must be able to relocate Co-located with the business

18 Typical I/T characteristics, continued....
Other Financially.... - Competitive base salary - Few stock options/grants at low/entry levels - Strong 401(k)/retirement program (hired for a career) - No partnership program The “extras”.... - Provide reimbursement for additional schooling and certifications - Formal new hire program/ rotation program - Continuous training in technical and non-technical areas through out career - Chance to get involved in campus recruiting activities

19 Characteristics we are looking for in YOU
Good communication and interpersonal skills Demonstrated leadership skills/ initiative Good analytical thinking and problem solving Prior internship or relevant experience Planning and organizational skills Implementers, not “creators” of technology Effective contributor on teams Ability to adapt to change Future Technical Advisors and IS Managers
