Thesis How education improves society as a whole and the effect it can have on your life The fact that the more schooling you have the better jobs and amount of money are supposed to be available

Why’s Education Important? Allows people to communicate and work with each other much more efficiently Quality of work improves due to everyone being much more qualified Amount of money someone makes goes up Keeps people informed and educated about their surroundings through the news

The Devolopment of Modern Education Early Societies- No separate social institution (schools) Nobody was a full time paid teacher, older people usually passed their knowledge on to the younger generations Common in tribal groups Linked to industrialization (the more industrialized, usually their citizens are more educated

Development of Modern Education (Continued) Thomas Jefferson and Noah Webster proposed a universal system of schooling based on standardized text that would instill patriotism and government Reflected political stance United States had no comprehensive school system

Development of Modern Education (Continued…Again) Most children of the lower class and all slaves received no formal education Only wealthy could afford sending their children to high school College was almost beyond the reach of everyone By 1918, all U.S. states had mandatory education laws

Education, Global Perspective, and Most Industrialized Education reflects its culture Competition among individuals is downgraded Children in grade school work as a group, mastering the same schools and materials Teachers stress respect for elders and others Education was limited to the elite (Industrializing)

Least Industrialized Mandatory attendance laws are not enforced Most people work on the land or take care of the family, needing little education Most children do not go to school past the first couple of grades The wealthy have the means and the leisure for formal education

Functionalist Perspective We have become a credential society (Use of diplomas and degrees to determine jobs) Hiring college graduates, employers assume they are responsible individuals Specific job skills must be mastered before an individual is allowed to do certain work

ICP (Individualism, Competition, and Patriotism Thread of U.S. educational system Learned in earlier grades when teachers point out a particular person for their certain success Competitive games in the classroom and school yard transmit the core value of competition (Spelling bees and any type of sport)

Gate keeping Determining which people will enter what occupations One type of gate keeping is credential Often accomplished by tracking (the sorting of students into different educational programs on the basis of real or perceived abilities) Determines your social placement

Problems in U.S. Education Grade inflation: (1/3 of all entering college freshman have a high school GPA of an A) Social Promotion Passing students to the next grade without mastery of materials Functional illiteracy (High school graduates who have trouble with basic reading and math) Peer groups: Influences teenagers Teenage pregnancy: Unlikely to complete high school Violence in schools: Deteriorated to point where safety is an issue ex: metal detectors and guards
