Cornell 18,000 students 2,000 faculty Twelve colleges on Ithaca campus Four are state colleges, eight are private (including grad school and school of cont ed) A favorite faculty member defines Cornell as “centrally isolated”.

Computing at Cornell CIT - about 250 folks. Campus support providers - at least that many again. CIT provides technology infrastructure used by most members of the campus community.

What is your current technology infrastructure for teaching and learning? There is a mostly solid technology infrastructure at Cornell University. The network and its connections to the World Wide Web are an essential part of our teaching and learning infrastructure. We provide a centrally supported server cluster for teaching and learning. We are developing an environment for publishing academic information. Collaborating with Library and Computer Science to put in place a (DIENST based) environment that provides easy storage, archiving, and access.

What is your current technology infrastructure for teaching and learning? Public computing facilities - essential components of the teaching and learning infrastructure. Technology in the classroom environment. A New Media Center primarily for faculty and graduate student use.

How are you organized to support teaching and learning? Academic Technology Services (ATS) provides centralized instructional technology support services in a distributed support environment. ATS collaborates with other organizations across campus to coordinate delivery of services. Distributed services are offered by the Library, Media Services, Office of Distance Learning, Campus Store and the Center for Learning and Teaching and individual departments. Also have several faculty technology advisory groups such as FABIT and AGET.

How are you organized to support teaching and learning? Central services: training, consulting, help-desk, networked-based and web-based services; computing facilities, server space; web-related tools; purchasing guidelines, site licenses, vendor agreements and more for students, faculty and staff - see Computing at Cornell on the WWW. Distributed services: (MS) - video production, graphic design, print and publication services, satellite and video conferencing; CLT) - course evaluation, instructional design, teaching skills and tutoring for students ( (ODL) - design and production for distance learning courses, video classrooms; (Campus Store) - Course Packets and Textbook services. (Library) - Customized references; reserved reading, training

What are your top issues and how are you addressing them? Upgrading the campus network Preparing a proposal for funding a major network upgrade initiative which will probably entail rewiring and new electronics for buildings. Coordination of decentralized services Clarifying the services offered by various support organizations across campus by offering “one stop shopping” and project coordination. Reducing duplication of services and focusing on filling the gaps. Insufficient human resources to meet the ever increasing demand for support services. Be selective and prioritize work. Increase collaboration across campus; increase user self-reliance.

What are you doing to support faculty? First point of contact and service coordination Consulting and atc_support mailbox Instructional Technology Support services with on-line request system Server space, CourseInfo, web-related course support and communication tools, accounts for on- line student projects; instructional computer labs; software installation for labs, research computing accounts and access to math and stats software Technology training with instructional focus

What are you doing to support faculty? Academic Technology Center Web site and electronic newsletter. New Media Center: access to hardware, software and peripherals Instructional Design and limited production services. Infrastructure development projects such as secure on- line student course evaluations Purchasing guidelines, vendor agreements and site licenses.

What are you doing to support students? Student support focuses on using the basic technology tools available to the entire campus community. Providing extensive connectivity both on and off campus. Offering technology training for students Providing public access to computing

What are you doing to support students? Support services A general HelpDesk and Res-Net HelpDesk staffed by well-trained students and used by students as well as faculty and staff in the Cornell community. Net-print A printing service for students that includes an easy billing process. CUPeople Web pages Student computing coordinator Staff member that advocates for and addresses the technology needs of students at Cornell.

What are you doing to support students? Negotiating vendor agreements that support student computer purchases at very good prices. Proposing a multi-media studio for use by students. Providing student employment and on-the-job training for about 400 students across the CIT/ATS organization.

What are you doing to support course management, web delivery and course web sites? CourseInfo: a web course management tool and template - Cornell is a beta site DreamWeaver training with emphasis on site management capabilities Extensive documentation, user’s groups, list servs, FAQ and support mailbox Various other web-related services and communication tools Service that populates course web sites with registrar’s data. Ability to kerberize a web site. Developing an electronic gradebook. Developing secure on-line student evaluation of courses

What is changing and why? Student expectations of the campus technology and computing environment are increasing. There are increased demands on faculty to use technology which in turn has faculty making increasing and different demands on technology organizations like ours. Pioneering faculty and early adopters are no longer as willing as they once were to be trained and do a lot of development work themselves. Teaching and learning activities are putting an increasingly high demand on the campus’ technology infrastructure - e.g. video streaming.

What do you see as emerging issues/needs/demands on the horizon? Archiving course web sites Providing security for and access to course web sites from public relations; copyright and academic use perspectives Program evaluation and cost benefit analysis More tools for assessing student competencies - especially relevant for remotely located students Long term support for technology initiatives after the first implementation Security and access with regard to firewalls Intellectual property and copyright issues - an example of which is reserved reading Assisting faculty with limited technology skills and programming resources to take projects to completion
