Charlie Meila| Senior Sales Manager 01 st October Engineers Ireland Briefing: ISO 50001& Training

Overview 1.ISO 50001 – an overview 2.ISO 50001 and Training 3.Upcoming developments

1. ISO 50001 – a macro level solution International experience is that ISO 50001 is a fundamental part of strategies to reduce energy consumption, address security of supply concerns and achieve improvements in: –energy efficiency, –industry and professional capacity and –deliver a sustainable approach to energy management Some examples…..

1. ISO 50001 – a macro level solution South Africa –Security of supply (or lack thereof) is a national concern and major risk –The National Energy Efficiency Strategy is to achieve demand reduction and increase efficiency –Supported by implementation programmes, e.g.. Industrial Energy Efficiency Improvement Programme… –ISO 50001 is a thematic focus area of the IEEIP

1. ISO 50001 – a macro level solution USA –Superior Energy Performance (SEP) programme –ISO 50001 is used as the foundation tool –Participants must be assessed by an accredited certification body as meeting the requirements of ISO 50001 Accreditation is the process by which a certification body is deemed competent to issue ISO certification. Accreditation can only be awarded by National Competent Bodies.

1. ISO 50001 – a macro level solution Ireland –Energy Agreements programme –Attaining ISO 50001 certification is a requirement of the programme and support is offered to achieve it –Participants must be assessed by an accredited certification body as meeting the requirements of ISO 50001

Successes from the EAP –Energy Efficient Design Methodology –Operational control methodology (HVAC, Refrigeration, Steam, Compressed Air) –Alternative methodology integration (Lean, Six- Sigma, Kaizen, TQM, Treasure hunt) –Sectoral approaches (Food and Dairy, Data Centre, Commercial buildings) –Sector cluster energy networks –Energy Management Maturity Model development 1. ISO 50001 – a macro level solution

Is it mandatory? Legitimate concern as regards costs and time required…what to cover? Clause 4.5.2 refers: The organisation shall ensure that any person(s) working for or on its behalf, related to significant energy uses, are competent on the basis of appropriate education, training, skills or experience. The organisation shall identify training needs associated with the control of its significant energy uses and the operation of the EnMS. The organisation shall provide training or take other actions to meet these needs. 2. ISO 50001 & Training

2. ISO 50001 and training:- how long will it take; what should we cover etc etc ?

What is done in practice? Clients undertake a training needs analysis are the people competent or do we need to invest? they focus on areas of significant energy uses and the operation of the system (i.e. they conduct a basic risk assessment). they review the options and benefits (e.g. in house/external; on the job /taught; as part of a service contract etc.) they document a training plan and keep records of completion 2. ISO 50001 & Training

What else should they do? Review their investment and its return are the people better and what they do? is there an improvement in energy performance? establish if the format used to train work for the audience? review training needs as they update their Energy Review in the event of “energy losses” attributable to people as the organisation changes and as the business changes 2. ISO 50001 & Training

We are seeing more professionals add the Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) and/or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) qualification to their CV “Mandatory” qualification (e.g. as being proposed in UK’s Dept. Energy Climate Change (DECC) consultation on the Energy Efficiency Directive) There are ISO and EN standards in development on Energy Audits The role of the competent and professionally qualified (energy) engineer is set to become central to many businesses into the future. 3. Upcoming developments

Certification Europe’s approach: –We train people on how to implement ISO 50001 –We train people on how to audit ISO 50001 –We train professionals on measurement and verification (CMVP) and technical auditing (CEA)* *Delivered in partnership with AEE/EVO/Target Energy Next step/more info?
