4 TAG LIMITATIONS Tags are warning devices Tags shall never be used in place of a lock

5 Lockout/tagout Definitions Affected Employee Authorized Employee Energized Energy Isolation Device Lockout Lockout Device Maintenance and/or servicing Tagout Tagout Device

6 Requirements for use of tags Only those tags which have been approved by the Safety Department will be used Tags are to be removed only by the authorized employee responsible for the tag with his or her name Tags must be capable to withstand the environmental conditions of the workplace

7 Requirements for use of tags Tags must be securely attached Tagout device attachment means shall be non-reusable, attachable by hand, and self-locking with a minimum unlocking strength of no less than 50 pounds

8 ENERGY CONTROL PROCEDURES 1. Notification 2. Preparation for shutdown 3. Machine or equipment shutdown 4. Machine or equipment isolation 5. Applying lockout or tagout devices 6. Stored energy 7. Verification of isolation

9 Zero Energy State Procedure (ZESP) 1. Identification of the ZESP 2. Use of the ZESP to apply energy controls 3. Verify that no other energy sources exist 4. Perform required servicing or maintenance work 5. Release the energy controls

10 Release From Lockout or Tagout 1. Inspect the Work Area 2. Initial Employee Notification 3. Removal of Lockout or Tagout Devices 4. Final Employee Notification 5. Follow the machine or equipment specific startup procedures

11 OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS Will be informed of hazardous energy control requirements Will be expected to follow the same basic program Will be required to document that they have been trained in standard lockout/tagout procedures Provide each authorized employee with approved lockout/tagout devices
