Grand Challenge Network Problems 1.Network management and control in the presence of fast network dynamics 2.Reliable delivery with deadlines Vincent W. S. Chan Joan and Irwin Jacobs Professor, EECS, MIT SES DoD 1Chan@MIT.edu

2 Current network dynamics (slow) Applications: Network does not respond to per session dynamics Little time deadline services Network: Slow provisioning in backbone Static wireless infrastruct ure Future network dynamics (fast) Applications: Resource allocation for per flow large transactions High granularity wireless transactions with deadline Network: Highly fluid wireless topologies Long reach lightpath transients in physical layer Future network management and control challenges Chan@MIT.edu

3 Channel rates in bps RF satcom scintillations Satcom RF capacity dynamics Fiber link transients Laser comm Wireless-fading 1K MANET disconnections 10 Wireless handover Current Internet Architecture: TCP/IP Phenomena leading to network impairments Chan@MIT.edu

4 Subsystem scale # of users coupled 10 x 10 1.5x 10 2x Fast/per-session Short term average Quasi-static Distributed Localized/distributedCentralized WAN NM&C routing MAN NM&C routing LAN/Users Network control time scale will increase by 10 3 Scalable distributed/centralized algorithms must be used X  1/dynamics Fiber ~ 4 MANET ~ 1 Stops at MAN SAT ~ 2-3 Dynamics: mobility, channel effects, elephants, changing network topologies Need 30-100Gbps links for full link state updates (refresh per coherence time) # of users/time-scale ~ constant? Chan@MIT.edu

5 Before: Quasi-static provisioning, localized sensing and restoration (e.g. SONET, G709) Future: Fast transients, fluid topologies, per session resource allocations, … Problems: Dynamics too fast and too many for full sensing Even with full network states, how to do resource allocation computations? How to collapse amount of network state sensed ∆, but retain reasonable efficiencies? Network management designs must be done with considerations of amount of state information sensed and optimized with performance metrics Reliability costs efficiency except at 1. Network information sensed Efficiency Reliability 0 ∆ 1 11 Network management and control challenges Cost of efficiency for added reliability Chan@MIT.edu
