Universal PV Interface™ Alliance Overview December 2011

Confidential Overview Scope – ‘active’ PV modules that directly integrate microinverters and power optimizers, which currently requires the use of proprietary connection schemes PROBLEM  higher costs, supply complexity, reduced flexibility, forces technology bets Issue A standard interface for PV modules that allows any compliant power electronic device to simply ‘plug in’ Analogous to a USB port— compliant peripherals plug in to compliant hosts Solution The Universal PV Interface (UPVI) Alliance will develop standard interfaces between PV modules and power electronics devices, available to all members for implementation

Confidential PV Module Module ‘Baseplate’ Power Electronics Device * * Microinverter, DC optimizer, Active J-box, Passive J-box, etc Vision 1.Lowest Possible Cost 2.Maximum Reliability + Safety 3.Compatibility Across Devices 4.Compatibility Across Vendors Key Requirements

Confidential UPVI Alliance – What It Is and Is Not IsIs Not Governance Non-profit corporation led by focused industry participants e.g. USB-IF, SunSpec, SD Card Alliance, etc Standards body e.g. IEEE, IEC, ISO, etc. Membership Open to all manufacturers, regulatory bodies, testing agencies, system integrators, etc Centered around any one manufacturer or organization Development Greenfield approach that begins with market requirements, ends with engineering spec Attempt to force-fit an existing design into an industry standard

Confidential Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Policy Necessary Claims – existing IP used in the adopted specification(s) Owned by claiming Member Claiming member agrees to a RAND license to all interested Member licensees RAND = non-exclusive, non-discriminatory terms, no sub-license rights Alliance IP – created by Alliance personnel, or contributed Owned by the Alliance Members automatically receive a royalty-free license Joint IP – developed jointly by Alliance and Member personnel Jointly owned by Alliance and Member BoD can make available to all Members at terms of its choice

Confidential Alliance Structure Board of Directors * 4 Sponsor Members * up to 6 more TBD Technical Electro- Mechanical Others Back-End Test Certification TBD Marketing TBD Executive Committee Steering Committees Working Groups

Confidential Steering Committees Technical Electro-Mechanical – physical dimensions, materials, location of bypass diodes, etc Lead – Greg Madianos, SolarBridge Technologies Marketing Member recruitment and outreach, awareness of standard among manufacturers, distributors, installers, etc Lead – Louis Lalonde, Enecsys Certification Interoperability + compliance testing as done by recognized test organization Lead – TBD

Confidential Roadmap Development is presently in the MRD stage  the opportunity is now for early Members to influence the design at a formative stage

Confidential Next Steps Get Involved – JOIN! Membership documents available NOW at www.upvi.org www.upvi.org Technical and Marketing Steering committees are underway For More Information: www.upvi.org help@upvi.org Stan Moyer Executive Director upvi_ed@inventures.com (925) 275-6663 upvi_ed@inventures.com
