Lesson to be used by EDI-trained teachers only. CFU Teacher models problem 1. Students complete problem 2. Students, you already know what capital letters are. You also know that the first word in a sentence is always capitalized. Many times, more than just the first word in a sentence needs to be capitalized. Today, we will capitalize proper nouns, beginnings of sentences, months, and days of the week. Give me an example. Which word has a capital letter? Explain your answer. 1. birthday 2. May To capitalize means to use an uppercase letter. The uppercase letter is bigger than the lowercase letter. Examples: Aa Bb Cc We can capitalize more than one word in a sentence. Capitalize the following words:Examples Proper nouns, or names of people, places, and holidays. David Sacramento Christmas Names of all months. August September Names of all the days of the week. Tuesday Sunday The word at the beginning of a sentence must always be capitalized. My dog is big. The tree is short. Examples: 1. The girl lives in Sanger, California. 2. His birthday is in August. 3. My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Non-examples: 1. the big sale is today. 2. My favorite day of the week is friday.

It is important to capitalize proper nouns, beginnings of sentences, months and days of the week because it: 1. helps you recognize important words while you are reading.
