Introduction to Art Class What is art?

Lesson Objectives  Recognize that art today includes an extensive variety of forms produced with many different materials.  Understand that what we call art is affected by the work of artists, art historians, archeologists, teachers, students, museum and galleries.  Understanding that cultures past and present from all over the world contribute to the expansive variety of today’s art.

Lesson Activities  Webct Discussion  Webct Assessment: – questionnaire “self test”  Assignment: Objects of the 21 st Century –A notebook program project, whereby students insert pictures and type in reasoning for their choices.

Assessment: Grading  Students will have to upload their journal project as an attachment into Webct.  The instructor will have to open the attachment: print it into journal to make ink annotations and assign a grade.  Then the instructor will send the graded assignment back as an attachment to the student.

10 items to consider 1.We will get our content into the tablet by using Webct. 2.Students will use Webct to receive their assignments. 3.The presentation is a series of hands-on activities, therefore the students will constantly be engaged. 4.Student work will be submitted via Webct

5. The TabletPC “ink annotations” will be used to write comments and to assign a grade to the students. 6. The graded and commented project will be returned as a Webct attachment. 7. We will have “lids-down” time if we revisit the quiz by using the projector or a PowerPoint to have a verbal discussion.

8. We may have to switch our table arrangements from groups to rows. We will have maintenance of equipment problems. 9. This is very repeatable, because it will be easy to view artworks and take quizzes with color.

The Assignment

Webct Discussion  Discussion Question: –How do you define art? –List some types of artwork—use journal.  View artworks from Chapter 1 as a multiple choice quiz “activity”. –Have students check if the think it is art or is not. –This is not graded quiz.

Review quizzes  Which artworks did you pick as artwork right away? –Why did you think those were artworks and the others were not? –Take time to “revise artwork lists”.

Object from the 21 st Century Project  Look around you. Imagine that some of the objects you see will be discovered many years from now. Imagine how these objects will look to someone who has never seen them before. 1. 1.

 Requirements –Use the program notebook –Make an list of 20 image of things you think will survive and be valued. Find 10 of these items on the internet to place into your gallery. –Write and defend your reasoning for why you choose each of the items.  Why will this be valued as art?  Why do you think that it will survive through the passing of time?
