Properties of Bonds Lab re-cap

Lab  Yesterday you discovered properties of bonds. You used conductivity, water (which is polar), and hexane (which is non-polar).  Find the trends.

Ionic Bonds  Solubility: Dissolve in polar liquids but not in non-polar liquids.  Conductivity: Does not conduct as a pure substance, but will conduct in a solution.

Ionic Bond  Malleability: Brittle  Mp/Bp: High melting point

Polar Covalent Bond  Solubility: Dissolves in polar liquids, does not dissolve in non-polar liquids.  Conductivity: Does not conduct as a pure substance.

Polar Covalent Bond  Malleability: Solid = brittle  Polar liquids = liquids  Mp/Bp: Medium Bp/Mp

Non-polar covalent  Solubility: Dissolves in non-polar liquids, but not in polar.  Conductivity: Not in pure substance, not in solution.

Non-polar covalent  Malleability: Brittle  Mp/Bp: Lower Mp/Bp

Metallic  Solubility: Dissolves in nothing  Conductivity: You better believe it.

Metallic  Malleability: Malleable  Mp/Bp: High mp/bp
