COURSE OUTCOMES Benchmarking Curriculum for Teachers

Course Outcomes: A Summary Course Outcomes articulate what ALL students will know and be able to do by the end of one specific subject or course These Outcomes: Incorporate standards that require more than four weeks to accomplish Focus on content knowledge and skills Span one subject and one year Build on and do not repeat Team/Department and Course Outcomes from previous grades May contribute directly to relevant Team/Department Outcomes

Course Outcomes: The Big Picture Standards that can be accomplished in a lesson plan Standards that take 2-4 weeks to accomplish Standards that take more than 1 unit to accomplish Standards that take more than 1 year to accomplish Team/Dept. Outcomes Course Outcomes Unit Goal LP Standards that can be accomplished in a lesson plan Standards that take 2-4 weeks to accomplish Standards that take more than 1 unit to accomplish Standards that take more than 1 year to accomplish Team/Dept. 4 Course Outcomes: Components 4-7 Outcomes for each course/subject The stem “SWBAT” (students will be able to) For each Outcome, one verb from Bloom’s Taxonomy Verbs must be: Active Observable Challenging & Developmentally Appropriate Constitute a “floor” not a “ceiling” of student achievement

Course Outcomes: Bloom’s Taxonomy Evaluation Synthesis Analysis Application Comprehension Knowledge Bloom’s Taxonomy Bloom’s Verbs are at the heart of writing good Outcomes.

Course Outcomes: Levels of Critical Thinking Team/Departmen t Critical Thinking Levels K – 2 Explain and Apply (with scaffolding) 3 - 5 Apply and Analyze (with scaffolding) 6 - 8 Apply, Analyze and Synthesize (with scaffolding) 9 -12 Analyze and Synthesize and perhaps Evaluate

Course Outcomes: Examples 1 st Grade Math 1. SWBAT use improvised lengths to compare objects. 2. SWBAT organize data into as many as 3 categories. 3. SWBAT solve one-step word problems using addition and subtraction up to 20. 4. SWBAT recognize numbers to 100 are made with tens and ones. 5. SWBAT tell time in hours and half-hours. 6. SWBAT draw shapes with specific attributes. 7. SWBAT add 2 digit numbers with regrouping.

Course Outcomes: Examples 4 th Grade Math 1. SWBAT use place value sense and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. 2. SWBAT solve multi-step word problems with whole numbers. 3. SWBAT solve an equation with fractions using addition, subtraction, and multiplication. 4. SWBAT compare a variety of two-dimensional figures. 5. SWBAT relate decimals to corresponding fractions with denominators of 10 and 100.

Course Outcomes: Examples HS Algebra I Math 1. SWBAT create linear, quadratic and exponential models. 2. SWBAT analyze functions using different representations to model relationships and situations. 3. SWBAT solve one and two variable algebraic problems using numeric, graphing, and analytic methods. 4. SWBAT explain problems using the language of algebra. 5. SWBAT solve problems using graph paper, calculator, and other manipulatives. 6. SWBAT interpret linear models based on the summary, representation, and interpretation of data on two categorical and quantitative variables.

Course Outcomes: Your Turn Critique the following Course Outcomes for 6 th Grade Math: 1.SWBAT add rational numbers in real-world scenarios. 2.SWBAT identify and solve linear equations with one exponent. 3.SWBAT identify triangles in real-world problems. 4.SWBAT analyze plots and categories of data. 5.SWBAT use ratios to solve real-world problems. 6.SWBAT apply fractions to real-world scenarios.

Team/Department & Course Outcomes: Examples Examples: Lower Elementary (K-2) Mathematics Team/Department Outcome SWBAT add and subtract 2-digit numbers with regrouping. Course Outcomes KSWBAT show knowledge of math facts up to 10. 1 st SWBAT show knowledge of math facts up to 20. 2 nd SWBAT add and subtract 2-digit numbers with regrouping. Team/Department Outcome SWBAT identify place value to the hundred thousand. Course Outcomes KSWBAT recognize numbers 10-20 are made with tens and ones. 1 st SWBAT recognize numbers to 100 are made with tens and ones. 2 nd SWBAT recognize numbers 100-999 as hundreds, tens and ones.
