Ch 1:1-4Purpose of the letter Ch 1:5-16Qualities of Presbyter Ch 2:10-11Handling of heretics
6
The Letter to Philemon Philemon was a well-to-do Christian, probably converted by Paul. He has a house church where the faithful gather. Onesimus is a runaway slave who is owned by Philemon.
7
Paul meets Onesimus and somehow gives him refuge and converts him. Paul reluctantly sends him back ti Philemon who has the power to put him to death. Paul wants him back to be his helper.
8
Significance The letter is relevant to any one who has slaves; even the house church. Paul realizes that he cannot change the social structure of his society which allows slavery. Instead he advocates love as a solution instead of using his Apostolic authority.
