General Challenges - my theses ISSUES Leadership From personal to institutional concern Co-ordination Introducing new competences Cooperation with new actors Reputation and risk management

Point of Departure The university - a place of learning, research and education based on the individual authority to give academic teaching Developed into action, branding, ranking and a highly competitive international activity And still needs to be a place of learning, research and education Physical or virtual place?

Challenge nr 1 - Leadership Co-ordination is needed but not everyone wants to be co-ordinated The claim for autonomy among some of the individual researchers versus the need for co- ordinated institutional action The need for committed leadership regardless if you belong to faculty or administration

Challenge nr 1 - Leadership Many European universities are fairly decentralised ….but some international programs are so huge and hardly grasped by the individual researchers Thinking in terms of “markets” when the university is thinking in terms of “Humbolt” or “Newman”…. More than a language problem …the need for sensitive but clear leadership

Challenge nr 2 - Organisation Before – educational exchange programs the major visualisation of “Internationalisation” Now – strategic alliances, lobbying, advanced research cooperation, joint programs and joint degrees, recruitment of international students and staff, international alumni U4, Matariki, Coimbra, EUC (examples) ESMU, HUMANE

Challenge nr 2 - Organisation International issues integrated into all units within administration! Faculty offices – Directors of studies, EU-coordinators Communication & External Relations – project managers for marketing, production of material, fundraising, alumni Student affairs and Registrar– evaluation of documents, admission, information, student councelling and career office, scholarships, student records, graduation Including international office – specialists on internal exchange programs, includig Erasmus Mundus

Challenge nr 2 - Organisation Planning – integrate strategic international issues in the main planning process Human Resources – receiving/sending staff to/from abroad, international leadership programmes Development of Teaching and Learning – skills training (language capacity) Need for advanced ICT tools for integrated international learning (example: Uppsala University; learning lab)

Challenge nr 2 - Organisation Legal affairs – contracts agreements Financial administration – handling international money, setting up projectadministration, auditing systems etc Vice Chancellors Office – Rector (!) Director International Relations International network within administration proofs to be very helpful

Challenge nr 3 – New Competences Introducing new competences into the centre of the university! New administrative solutions has to be developed (project administration, time registration sheets and so on – normally with short notice Joint programs and joint degrees with new administrative and legal models Business solutions (international consortia with companies) Cost-benefit analyses of alumni events… Using the concept of “strategic marketing”

Challenge nr 4 - Interaction …with new partners besides good, old, well established universities Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Embassies Chambers of Commerce International Companies Recruitment agents And so on …..not all colleagues feel comfortable in the company of these organisations.

Challenge nr 5 - Reputation & Risk Management Individuals always representing the university when abroad for good and bad Keep an eye on the ranking list and avoid ending up in “wrong company” All things that can go wrong when receiving (inter)national students This is a shared concern for Faculty and Administration and a challenge

Cases to reflect on You can always be blamed for decisions taken but rarely the ones you didn´t take. What effect will that have on our strategic decisions?

Question: Can you afford internationalisation?
