What is Instructional Technology? The theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management, and evaluation of processes and resources for learning Promotes Communication and Interactivity Under learning theory, IT can be of service to you regardless of your teaching style Cognitivism (learner-content interactions) Constructivism (learner-instructor and learner-learner) What does this mean to faculty? Identify and implement ways that technology can be used to enhance classes - whether it be the delivery of content, inclusion of interactivities, assessments, course management, etc.

Trends in Academic Technology Portability Interactivity/Two way communication Student/Faculty generated/controlled content Management/Assessment

Portability Electronic student profiles for pre-professional tracks Teaching, design, professional writing. Teaching Grows and goes with the student Challenges: Storage Who’s responsible Expense Solutions Easy to use, high capacity, reliable, free tools Google Sites Tools embedded with other services (i.e. LMS) at no or little extra cost

Interactivity/Communication Social Networks Facebook (communicate, share, create, coordinate) Facebook Student Activities (coordinate, collaborate, share) Student Activities Blogs Student Blogs (create, share, communicate) Student Blogs Faculty/Staff Wikis Class wikis (collaborate, share, communicate, learn) Wiki Dub French Freshman Forum - Depression Interest/project wikis

Interactive Hardware Wireless Slates Allows for direct student involvement Enables capture of notes, formulae, graphs, etc Youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoaH_DBiuJc) Youtube video Personal Responders Youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaQRHzB-Qwc) Youtube video Personal Media Players (i.e. iPod) Class related videos that travel with the student Supplemental lessons through I-tunes U Podcasts to supplement learning Student generated media See 100 ways to use your iPod to learn and study better: http://tinyurl.com/2l25dg

Student/Faculty generated/controlled content Exploration/Geography: Google Earth (earth.google.com) 3D Authoring: Google Sketchup (sketchup.google.com) Website creation: Google Sites (sites.google.com) Animation, video, webdesign, etc tools are freely available and very intuitive to use. See A Free Learning Tool for Every Learning Problem and 101 Free Learning Tools: http://tinyurl.com/48m5ur http://tinyurl.com/5wcw8t

Management/Assessment Learning Management Systems Blackboard vs. Moodle vs. Sakai vs. Angel Provides for course homes, assessment tools, file repositories, etc. Other Assessment tools Online assessment generators Personal Responder Systems Collaborative Tools to assist with individual objectives and assessments for collaborative group projects.

Overriding Themes Ease of use Learning should drive hardware Learning should continue outside of the classroom Tech should have an academic purpose Engagement, interaction, assessment, etc. Open-source is an option Free or cheaper More flexibility

Examples of ways in which I can Help Provide tech recommendations around your ideas for updating a course Keep you informed about about new technologies Assist with the best use of existing technologies such as Blackboard, Moodle, blogs, wikis, etc Help develop a solution to a teaching concern Plan an instructional technology project Help design teaching and classroom spaces Find resources needed to carry out a project Co-teach to introduce collaborative technology

W&J ITS Wiki Specific examples of how tech is being used by W&J faculty http://wiki.washjeff.edu/display/hd/Ideas Fall 2008 Faculty Survey and General Info about some common educational technologies http://wiki.washjeff.edu/display/hd/Info+about+Various+Techs
