$400 Question from H4 Describe the dependent and independent variable and give an example of each.

$400 Answer from H4 Independent Variable-also known as the “manipulated” variable. This is the variable we change or control such as changing the soil temperature in the experiment above. Dependent Variable-also known as the “responding” variable. This variable “depends” on the independent variable. An example would be the plant growth based on how we change the soil temperature.

$200 Question from H5 In October 1974 part of a male torso was found floating in the River Thames in England. Several parts, including the head and hands, were missing so police could not use the usual methods of fingerprints, facial features and dental records to identify the corpse. How was it eventually identified? A) Presence of gallstones B) All the choices are correct C) Blood type D) Skeletal characteristics demonstrated on x-ray

$200 Answer from H5 All the choices are correct This case made legal history because it was the first time a body was identified without fingerprints or dental records. It belonged to a petty criminal called William Henry Moseley.

$400 Question from H5 In 1835, Henry Goddard was asked to investigate a burglary in Southampton, England. The butler said a shot had been fired as he struggled with the burglars. Goddard retrieved the bullet and disproved the butler’s version of events by using which technique? A) Blood spatter analysis B) Studying the bullet's trajectory C) Bullet comparison D) Studying the broken glass

$400 Answer from H5 Bullet comparison The butler did it! Like most gun owners in those days, the butler made his own bullets by melting lead and pouring it into a mould. His mould had a fault, a small 'pimple'. The bullet had a corresponding flaw. Faced with the evidence, the burglar confessed to faking the burglary to curry favor with his employer. By the way, Henry Goddard was one of Scotland Yard’s original Bow Street Runners.

$500 Question from H5 The time of death can be calculated by various means. One is rigor mortis, Latin for 'the stiffness of death'. Another indication is livor mortis or lividity. What does this term refer to? A) Relaxation of muscles susbequent to rigor mortis B) Cloudiness in the eyes C) Gravitational pooling of blood D) Degree of digestion of stomach contents

$500 Answer from H5 Gravitational pooling of blood Livor is Latin for 'a black and blue spot' and refers to the discoloration of the skin in the lowest part of a cadaver resulting from the gravitational pooling of blood.

A tourist in Vienna is going through a graveyard and all of a sudden he hears some music. No one is around, so he starts searching for the source. He finally locates the origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads: Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827. Then he realizes that the music is the Ninth Symphony and it is being played backward! Puzzled, he leaves the graveyard and persuades a friend to return with him. By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has changed. This time it is the Seventh Symphony, but like the previous piece, it is being played backward. Curious, the men agree to consult a music scholar. When they return with the expert, the Fifth Symphony is playing, again backward. The expert notices that the symphonies are being played in the reverse order in which they were composed, the 9th, then the 7th, then the 5th. By the next day the word has spread and a throng has gathered around the grave. They are all listening to the Second Symphony being played backward. Just then, the graveyard's caretaker ambles up to the group. Someone in the group asks him if he has an explanation for the music. "Don't you get it?" the caretaker asks incredulously.

Final Jeopardy Answer He’s decomposing!!! HAHAHAHA
