4 What influences body image?  Media – tells you what you should look like  Magazines  TV/Movies  Advertisements  Celebrities  Peers – what others say  Weight – society tells us to be skinny; one body type better than another

5 Why is body image important to teenagers?  Relationships with peers  Want to fit in  Popularity  Affects self esteem  High body image = high self esteem

6 Negative consequences of having poor body image:  Eating disorders  Dieting  Obesity  Drug use  Depression  Low self esteem  Suicide

7 How well do you like your body? Which do you say “yes” to?  I am constantly thinking about my body size, shape, and weight, and am constantly working to improve my body.  I would be much happier and my life would be better if I were thinner or more muscular.  I commonly skip meals to lose weight.  I weight myself more than once a day.  I exercise mainly to lose weight or to look better.

8 How well do you like your body? Which do you say “yes” to?  I completely exclude foods from one food group in order to manage my weight.  I don’t participate in sports and other activities because I am embarrassed about my body.  I like to wear oversized clothes to hide “flaws” in my body.  I believe there are good foods and bad foods.  When I see a model in a magazine I want to look like her/him.

9 Did you know …  Our genes determine 70% of our body weight and shape.  Some things are out of your control!!  Pictures of models in magazines and advertisements are technically altered.  What you see is not the truth!!

10 The truth about what goes on before the world sees a picture. Becoming a Model ….

11 Discussion Groups  Look at the magazine pages your group receives. Discuss the following questions. Be prepared to share your responses.  What do the pictures/advertisements want to make you think?  What false messages is this picture/ad portraying? What does this picture NOT show? What truth is missing?

16 Reflection:  Write a short reflection that addresses the following questions:  Do you believe body image is an issue among teenagers? Why? In your opinion do most teens have a positive or negative body image? Why?  If models and celebrities are “role models” what is this saying to teens – especially to females?  What could we do as a society to help with the problem of poor body image? What can be done to promote positive body images?
